Barbour's Bruce and its Cultural ContextsFrom D. S. Brewer

John Barbour's Bruce, an account of the deeds of Robert I of Scotland (1306-29) and his companions during the so-called wars of independence between England and Scotland, is an important and complicated text. Composed c.1375 during the reign of Robert's grandson, Robert II, the first Stewart king of Scotland (1371-90), the poem represents the earliest surviving complete literary work of any length produced in "Inglis" in late medieval Scotland, and is usually regarded as the starting point for any worthwhile discussion of the language and literature of Early Scots. It has also been used as an essential "historical" source for the career and character of that iconic monarch Robert I. But its narrative defies easy categorisation, and has been variously interpreted as a romance, a verse history, an epic or a chivalric biography. This collection re-assesses the form and purpose of Barbour's great poem. It considers the poem from a variety of perspectives, re-examining the literary, historical, cultural and intellectual contexts in which it was produced, and offering important new insights. Steve Boardman is a Reader in History at the University of Edinburgh. Susan Foran, currently an independent scholar, researches chivalry, war and the idea of nation in late medieval historical writing. Contributors: Steve Boardman, Dauvit Broun, Michael Brown, Susan Foran, Chris Given-Wilson, Theo van Heijnsbergen, Rhiannon Purdie, Biörn Tjällén, Diana B. Tyson, Emily Wingfield.

FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF GONE GIRL

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.

Amazon.com Review
As loyal Entertainment Weekly subscribers, we have been fans of Gillian Flynn for her smart, funny, and spot-on reviews of books, movies, and TV, but we were not prepared for her stunning debut novel Sharp Objects, a wickedly dark thriller that Stephen King calls a "relentlessly creepy family saga" and an "admirably nasty piece of work." We're calling it a cross between Twin Peaks and Secretary--sinister, sexy, and stylish. Perfect fall reading. --Daphne Durham

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Gillian Flynn

Q: Do you prefer writing novels or reviewing?
A: I think writing is more pure--and actually a bit easier for me. It's just me and my laptop, not me and my laptop and a TV show that 30 people have worked on. Reviewing keeps you sharp--I can hardly watch or read anything without taking notes now--but plain old writing I find actually relaxing.

Q: Do think your writing is influenced more by books that you have read, or shows/movies that you have seen?
A: My mom spent her career as a reading teacher and my dad is a retired film professor, so I was really steeped in both books and movies growing up. To this day, when I get my dad on the phone, pretty much his first sentence is "Seen anything good lately?" I love putting words together (I've never met a simile I didn't like), but when I write I often think in "scenes"--I want these two people, in a dirty bar, with this song playing in the background.

Q: I hear you are working on your second book...is it is too early to ask what it's about?
A: I'm still playing around with the whole plot--when I wrote Sharp Objects, I wasn't even sure who the killer was for a bit. But I can say [the new book] has to do with family loyalty, false memories, a wrenching murder trial, and a dash of good 'ole 1980s hair metal and devil worship.

Q: What is your writing process like? Have you changed anything about how you work since your first book?
A: My writing process is incredibly inefficient, and hasn't changed between books. I really don't outline: I know basically how I want the story to start, and vaguely how I want it to end (though like I said, with Sharp Objects even that changed!). Then I just write: Some characters I start finding more interesting, some less. I write entire swaths that I pretty much know I'll cut. I have an entire file of "deleted scenes." I guess the one thing that has physically changed is I moved into a new place since my first book--it has a great bathtub, and I'll prop my laptop up and write in the bath for hours. Which is, admittedly, weird.

From Publishers Weekly
Flynn's debut novel focuses on an emotionally fragile young woman whose sanity is being severely tested by family dysfunction, smalltown incivility and murder. It is a mesmerizing psychological thriller that is also quite disturbing and, thanks to reader Lee's chillingly effective rendition, at times almost unbearably so. Camille Preaker, a novice reporter with a history of self-mutilation, is sent to her hometown in Missouri to cover the murder of one teenage girl and the disappearance of another. There, she must face a variety of monsters from the past and the present, including her aloof and patronizing mother, her obnoxiously precocious 13-year-old stepsister who dabbles in drugs, sex and humiliation, and an unknown serial killer whose mutilated victims bring back haunting memories. Lee's interpretation of mom enhances the character's detachment and airy state of denial to an infuriating degree. And her abrupt change of pace when Camille suddenly begins chanting the words carved on her body is hair-raising. But the voice Lee gives to the stepsister—tinged with a sarcastic, cynical and downright evil girly singsong—makes one's blood run cold.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Critics agree that Gillian Flynn's psychological thriller and murder mystery is a far more sophisticated offering than a debut novel has any right to be. Flynn, the Chicago-based television critic for Entertainment Weekly, paints a clever, sensitive, and scathing portrait of small-town America—"Wind Gap truly is the home town from hell," notes the Washington Post—while portraying a convincing heroine consumed by violence, past and present. Flynn's vivid prose captures human foibles perfectly. If Camille's career is an old trick of the trade, it's a minor flaw in an otherwise stunning novel, "a tough tale told with remarkable clarity and dexterity, particularly for a first-time author" (Denver Post).

A Hard-Boiled Heroine
By Kevin Joseph
When men fight, according to first novelist Gillian Flynn, they tend to bludgeon one another in blunt contests of strength, like good-natured warriors facing off in an athletic contest. Women fight in a much nastier fashion, she asserts, clawing, biting and using whatever other sharp objects are available to achieve domination over their female rivals. If you're willing to buy into Flynn's scathing portrayal of the so-called gentler sex, you'll surely be sucked into this dark mystery/thriller.

Camille Preaker, a reporter for an obscure Chicago newspaper, is assigned to investigate the recent murders of two young girls in her claustrophobic Missouri hometown. Besides overcoming the natural wariness the townsfolk exhibit toward a nosy journalist, Camille must face down her dysfunctional family - a controlling mother, distant step-father and a disturbed, thirteen-year-old step-sister whose catty group of friends makes the "Mean Girls" crowd look like a troup of Brownies. The closer Camille gets to cracking this grisly mystery, the harder she struggles to keep her horde of inner demons at bay and the more she begins to fear for her own safety.

If judged purely by the intensity of its suspense and page-turning quotient, "Sharp Objects" would easily merit five stars. Flynn taps into the psychological horror generated by a twisted family in a way that electrifies the narrative, reminding me of Dean Koontz in that regard. I had trouble, though, accepting the unlikely logistics behind the crimes and found certain characters to be so over-the-top as to strain credibility. These quibbles aside, Gillian Flynn already has mastered a fast-paced and hard-boiled writing style that's perfectly suited for the suspense genre, and she has created a fascinating heroine who could form the centerpiece for a winning series.

Really Nice First-Novel From Author of "Gone Girl" Gillian Flynn
By Lizzy
NO SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW: Really nice first novel from this author, with a very defined 3-act structure. This one is written entirely in first-person, from only the main character's point of view. Act 1 sets the stage, but feels a bit disconnected. I would say Act 2 doesn't really begin until around page 50, when a big plot point is revealed. Prior to page 50 I found myself wondering "where is this going?" and after page 50, a few random facts in the novel get explained and then it really starts to come together. After that, it is a smooth ride downhill: a fast, engrossing read. So much so that you might find yourself ignoring your family members just to get to the end of this book. A girlfriend of mine is about to go on tour, and I had to finish reading this so I could lend it to her before she left. Once you read a good book, you need someone else to experience it with you, right?

Act 2 lasts for nearly the rest of the book until the last 20 pages or so, when Gillian Flynn surprises us again. Of course, if she gave you the ending you expected, it wouldn't be a good book, right? I will note that the ending is rather hastily wrapped up, and for me at least, my feelings about the characters don't really blossom as the could have with a more robust ending. I will say that she likely received this feedback from readers and learned from it, because all these "complaints" are corrected prior to her novel "Gone Girl." Gone Girl is like the older, rarer vintage of a really nice wine.

All in all, even Stephen King praised Sharp Objects as an excellent first effort, and it's a book worthy of your attention whether you're already a Gillian Flynn fan, or you just like suspenseful, thrilling novels. Once you've picked this one up, move on to "Gone Girl" and don't see the movie until you've read the book!

The Whining of Adults should be the title.
By V. Richards
First off, the title does not reflect the story. The concept of "cutters" is what I thought the book would be about but it is only a sideline thought. If you read a lot, you'll pick out at least one or two people near the beginning who could be the murderer. I did, and I was right. I was greatly disappointed that there wasn't any character development to speak of, no connection to any of the characters. This is the main reason I wasn't impressed with the story. There were a couple of sex scenarios inserted in the story, which were not needed. They felt disjointed and had no purpose.

On the plus side, it is a quick read. And without revealing any spoilers, I must say that the hiding place for the teeth was very clever.

Braddock's Defeat: The Battle of the Monongahela and the Road to Revolution, by David L. Preston

On July 9, 1755, British and colonial troops under the command of General Edward Braddock suffered a crushing defeat to French and Native American enemy forces in Ohio Country. Known as the Battle of the Monongahela, the loss altered the trajectory of the Seven Years' War in America, escalating the fighting and shifting the balance of power. An unprecedented rout of a modern and powerful British army by a predominantly Indian force, Monongahela shocked the colonial world - and planted the first seeds of an independent American consciousness. The culmination of a failed attempt to capture Fort Duquesne from the French, Braddock's Defeat was a pivotal moment in American and world history. While the defeat is often blamed on blundering and arrogance on the part of General Braddock - who was wounded in battle and died the next day - David Preston's gripping new work argues that such a claim diminishes the victory that Indian and French forces won by their superior discipline and leadership. In fact the French Canadian officer Captain Beaujeu had greater tactical skill, reconnaissance, and execution, and his Indian allies were the most effective and disciplined troops on the field. Preston also explores the long shadow cast by Braddock's defeat over the 18th century and the American Revolution two decades later. The campaign had been an awakening to empire for many British Americans, spawning ideas of American identity and anticipating many of the political and social divisions that would erupt with the outbreak of the revolution. Braddock's Defeat was the defining generational experience for many British and American officers, including Thomas Gage, Horatio Gates, and, perhaps most significantly, George Washington. A rich battle history driven by a gripping narrative and an abundance of new evidence, Braddock's Defeat presents the fullest account yet of this defining moment in early American history.

A New Definitive Study of an Iconic Battle that Helped to Shape the Nation
By richard w.
Prof. Preston has written a superb account of this iconic battle that epitomized the tactical differences as between the French Canadian - Indian forces (until Montcalm changed them) and Britain's traditional, Europe-derived massed infantry and volley fire. This is a fine "update" to the work of Kopperman, and may well be the definitive account for our times. Preston has found some important new sources, including a speech by an Iroquois warrior that sheds some light on one of Preston's main points: the Indian allies of New France had their own agenda(s), and allied with the French when that offered material and enduring rewards. This warrior also explained why some traditional Indian allies of the Brits were not so eager to support Braddock's "invasion" of the over-the-mountains territory that the Indians believed (with some obvious reasons) was their homeland: young George Washington, after his contacts with the French at the forks of the Ohio failed to consult with these Indian allies. This played into the widespread suspicion among the Indians that the French and the British had an overarching goal of eliminating them (the Indians) even while fighting each other for primacy.

Preston also dispels the old conventional wisdom of Braddock's generalship as being overly strict, hidebound, reflexive and narrowly confined by European traditions. Instead, Preston shows how, at several times, Braddock showed himself to be a "soldier's general," even holding the American colonial members of his expedition to a little lower standard of military conduct. He did not, however, neglect to institute extensive measures for march security, even with very few Indian scouts available. And Braddock never uttered the derogatory words about and to Indians that others attributed to him after he died in battle. But this isn't mere revisionism for its own sake; Preston's scholarship is highly impressive. His work is extensively noted, and his bibliography is extensive.

Preston spends most of this work narrating the history of the march, showing its extreme difficulties, which Preston has personally confirmed on the ground by walking portions of Braddock's Road that still exist, and by paddling down the rivers. This all highlights how radical this attempt was to project military power into the American heartland. Preston also hints at the question whether march fatigue and loss of sleep contributed to the performance of the troops when attacked. However, he astutely points out that the British troops stood and fought for some 3 hours a virtually invisible enemy who had assumed an ambush formation the length of the British line of march. This does not suggest undisciplined, panicked, incompetent soldiery.

The real story of the Monongahela, Preston shows, was the victory of the French and Indians due to their superior woodlands tactics. Preston corrects the traditional record that the French commander, Beaujeau, won over the Indian allies only at the last minute with a speech full of bravado and challenge. Instead, the Indians, who came from many tribes and from all over the modern US Midwest to the Atlantic lands, held their own council at least one day before the battle. They agreed to stand with the French, and brought numbers to raise the combined French & Indian force to about 950 fighters, over 2/3rds od whom were Indians, and it turned out the battle was mostly an Indian victory.

Preston goes on to provide some thought-provoking conclusions, and adds several highly useful appendices, including the two side's respective orders of battle, the casualty lists, the Iroquois' hitherto undiscovered speech, an account from the French side, etc.

This book is well-written in clear, concise prose that flows without distractions that limit the conveyance of information. It is the best book I have read on the subject by quite a margin, and is likely to stand as the definitive account of this battle for a long time. I recommend this for anyone interested in the American Frontier, our military and historical heritage, and as a vignette of what war fighting was like in America before there were roads, railroads, etc. This book deserves its 5 stars.

Braddock's Defeat
By Capn Jim
This is an outstanding history book. On a par with those written by David McCullough who has won the Pulitzer Prize twice. Meticulously researched, but more importantly, eminently readable. I could not put it aside for even a day. Highly recommended for anyone remotely interested in the foundation of the United States.

Great historical read.
By Mark L. Richards
This book reflects brilliant research and meticulous attention to detail. I was fascinated by the the implications of the battle on the future of American history. I have visited many of the landmarks noted in the book and always wondered how Braddock's army managed to build the road to transport the troops and supplies in that primeval wilderness. Many kudos to the author. This truly was the American Teutoburg.

Sweet Story with HEA
By Lisa'shonestbookreviews
I was given this book by Ms. Reed for my honest review. The stories plot had my attention from the start. I am a fan of menage books, and when I go to look for a new story/author I find there are there are far less out lately. Most of them are m/s, and have dominant stories. This was nowhere near any of those.
This was a lighthearted, sweet endearing story that had me from the start. I felt for Rylee's character. Losing the love of her life, at such a young age had to be difficult for her. Within time, and the constant help from friends, she was able to finally look forward to moving on with life. I was wishful from the beginning of this book she would get her HEA she much deserved after meeting the two easy going brothers at Twin Haven.
Cade's story was something I was a bit surprised by. With the love and support from his brother, Ryker he was able to learn to trust a woman once more. I enjoyed this book and look forward to more stories to come from Erika Reed.

Great Story!!

A touching story of a young widow needing a vacation. Going to a ranch owned by her best friend's twin brothers, she gets more than she bargained for. One twin, fun and carefree, the other dark, brooding and dealing with his own past. Both stealing her heart while handing over their own.

My first read by Erika Reed, but certainly not my last. LOVED IT!!

Amazon.com Review
What better way to test the security surrounding a U.S. vice president-elect than to hire someone skilled in the killing arts to penetrate his protection? Assassination strategy, though, is only part of the assignment facing Jack Reacher in Without Fail. This restive, blunt-edged ex-military cop must also determine whether recent threats against VP-to-be Senator Brook Armstrong are legitimate or are primarily intended to embarrass the perfectionist head of Armstrong's new Secret Service detail, M.E. Froelich, who happens to have been a girlfriend of Reacher's late brother.

If Without Fail lacks the emotional urgency of Lee Child's previous novel, Echo Burning, it still barely lets the reader catch a decent breath between plot crests. Jack and his fetching yet formidable colleague, Frances Neagley, must figure out how warning letters to Armstrong are being delivered into the Secret Service sanctum, whether the senator is at risk because of something political or personal, and who staged the demonstration murders of two innocent men also named Armstrong, first initial B. Unfortunately, a few twists (including the source of a thumbprint applied to the threats against Armstrong) can be figured out in advance, and the story is light on character development. A tiny breach in Reacher's reclusive carapace opens as Froelich transfers the love she once felt for his brother toward him, and there are suggestions that Neagley may have depths of feeling just waiting to be plumbed. However, other players are mere ciphers--the sacrificial victims of an action-oriented yarn. --J. Kingston Pierce

From Publishers Weekly
The sixth time's a charm for thriller meister Child, whose latest escapade starring ex-military cop Jack Reacher is handily his most accomplished and most compelling to date. The suspense-laden plot kicks off with U.S. Secret Service agent M.E. Froelich telling Reacher: "I want to hire you to assassinate the Vice President of the United States." V-p-elect Brook Armstrong has received a series of anonymous death threats, and Froelich needs to uncover their source and ascertain the effectiveness of Armstrong's security detail. Reacher agrees to masquerade as an assassin because he can't resist a challenge and because Froelich had loved his older brother, Joe, a Secret Service colleague killed in a botched operation. As Reacher pieces together an increasingly frustrating puzzle, Child ratchets up the excitement with several breathtaking set pieces, including a Thanksgiving dinner for D.C.'s homeless that turns deadly, a jaw-dropping coup de th‚ƒtre and a slam-bang finale in Wyoming's mountains. He even extracts tension from mundane events, as when Reacher searches for clues on a security video of an office cleaning crew. The novel's detailed insider's view of political skullduggery is certain to intrigue readers, and the various characters' relationships, handled with careful restraint, provide an added layer the growing attachment between Froelich and Reacher; both characters' recollections of Joe; Reacher's regard for Frances Neagley, a former colleague whom he calls in for help. And then there's Reacher himself, the stolid, flawed man's man who gives no quarter on any level. Indeed, the novel's final line serves as a pr‚cis of this quietly fascinating character: "He headed west for the Port Authority and a bus out of town." This Child's play will be a tough act to follow.

From Library Journal
Only Jack Reacher stands between Vice President-elect Brook Armstrong and his would-be assassins. But that's enough, because taking out bad guys is what highly skilled ex-military policeman Reacher does best. Recruited by M.E. Froelich, new head of the Secret Service VP detail and former lover of Jack's late brother Joe, Reacher enlists the aid of former U.S. Army master sergeant Frances Neagley, who's as pretty as she is potentially deadly. But it is Reacher alone who finds significance in the hyphen in a death threat and checks out the odd oil on a fingerprint as he puts together the pieces and zeroes in on the killers who are after Armstrong. The political scene adds interest to Child's trademark intricate plotting, and, in his sixth adventure (after Echo Burning), Reacher becomes an even more rounded character, revealing some of his background as his intelligence, intuition, and physical prowess all shine. Child's Jack Reacher thrillers get better every time, and this is a knockout. Essential for popular fiction collections. Lee Child At His Best
By Sharon Katz
Some people want Vice President-elect, Brook Armstrong dead. They tried to kill him in September. They had the silencer on the gun and the perfect location but the bullet missed. No one in the crowd heard the gun shot. Armstrong's hair stirred as the bullet moved past him but he thought it was nothing more than the wind. The attempt was a failure and no one noticed. They would try again. Soon. ...
So begins Lee Child's newest and best book to date, WITHOUT FAIL. ...This is the sixth in the series.
WITHOUT FAIL takes the readers behind the scenes of the Secret Service and shows us how they react to situations, why they do what they do to protect the people they're hired to protect, and we also get to see the measures they go through to do their job successfully.
Lee Child's books get better and better with each addition to the series. WITHOUT FAIL is a real page-turner with plenty of excitement all through it. Child has not only made a detailed study of his character, but he has delved into the workings of the military and government. Yes, on occasion Reacher and Neagley sometimes seem to have superhuman powers, but the readers will willingly forgive those moments to cheer on the heroes of this story.
This new fast paced novel not only keeps you on your toes trying to figure out who wants to kill the Vice President-elect but also keeps you wondering why. Child gives us the answers to the questions as the book progresses. We start to understand how personal childhood experiences control our actions as adults.
In WITHOUT FAIL, Child has written a wonderfully thrilling story. I highly recommend this well written book.

Is Jack becoming a social animal?
By Mr. Joe
I'm attracted to Lee Child's novels because of the hardboiled and self-contained nature of his hero, Jack Reacher. After almost two decades as a military cop in the U.S. Army, Jack now wanders the U.S. with only the clothes on his back - no car, no charge cards - and a penchant for crossing paths with assorted villains. Very soon, the reader begins to feel sorry for the Bad Guys.

Reacher is so unpolished that one sometimes wonders how he reached officer grade O-4 (Major), which would imply managing a wardrobe, knotting a tie, and displaying minimal social skills in the officers' mess and at the CO's annual Christmas party. It's not that Jack is a Neanderthal; he just doesn't care to run with the rest of the lemmings anymore.

In WITHOUT FAIL, M.E. Froelich, who heads the Secret Service protection detail for the newly elected Vice President, Brook Armstrong, hires Reacher to audit the security of the new Veep's protective screen. Froelich is also the ex-girlfriend of Jack's dead brother. After finding holes through which a potential assassin could drive a monster SUV, Reacher learns why the Service really wants his help. The VP is receiving credible death threats. And it may be an inside job.

I would've awarded WITHOUT FAIL at least one more star had it not been a Jack Reacher adventure. But it is, and here our prickly protagonist has to play well with others: Froelich, her boss Stuyvesant, FBI guy Bannon, and a colleague from Reacher's old Army days, ex-Sergeant Frances Neagley. Reacher's talent for punitive violence is severely curtailed compared to past episodes, revealing itself only at the very beginning and the very end. In between, Jack is reduced to being a consultant, even to the point of wearing a suit. Say it ain't so, Lee!

The most interesting character is Neagley, now employed by a civilian security firm. She's ostensibly more deadly at physical combat than Reacher himself, and he admits to being afraid of her skills. So, the reader waits, hoping she'll unleash some mayhem. In the meantime, we learn that Frances, while being a little in love with her old military boss, has a severe dislike of being touched due to some unspecified trauma in her past. Unfortunately, Neagley remains mostly a cipher, and the entertainment value of her character is left pretty much unexploited. Perhaps she'll appear in a future Reacher novel. Better still, the author should give her a series of her own.

I hope the next Reacher thriller is JACK IS BACK. With a vengeance.

The Day of Jack Reacher
By Gary Griffiths
While Frederick Forsyth's "The Day of the Jackal" is the classic assassination thriller, Lee Child hits another home run with "Without Fail", a page turner with all the technical accuracy of `Jackal" and the extra dose of adrenaline one would expect from Lee Child. Child's hulking loner Jack Reacher certainly has the mind of an assassin, and in "Without Fail", he is contracted by Secret Service agent M.E. Froelich to audit the security for the Vice President of the United States, the target of a threatened assassination. Froelich happens to be the former lover of Reacher's older brother, Joe, the former Treasury Department agent killed in action years before. What follows is an extremely credible portrayal of the US Secret Service and the challenges they face in protecting the holders of our highest public offices. As with all Child/Reacher novels, this one is well researched rich in detail. But just as the detail begins to hint at tedium, Child metes out another measure of plot twist, keeping the reader anxiously waiting for the next installment. Lee Child is a true student of pace, understanding the fine balance between plot development and action. Reacher's no-nonsense perspective on justice, crime and punishment is faithfully intact, but in "Without Fail", we meet Reacher's female equivalent, the formidable and lethal Frances Neagley, an ex-Army buddy of Reacher's. Like Child's hero, this is an austere, blunt, and powerful novel, ultimately predictable but never disappointing along the way. Entertainment in print simply does not get much better than this.

From a beginners perspective
By Miranda T. Walker
Thank you Mr. Faubion for making this new experience so easy and fun! I read the other reviews and just had to put my two cents in! I had NO trouble following, understanding and learning from your information packed book. Perhaps the lady wasn't aware this was a beginners book? Oh well, I'm looking at some of the other books you have written now and will continue to learn from them I'm sure! Thanks, and please keep writing!

Hard to follow?
By Paul Kattner
Another customer said this book was a piece of trash and hard to follow. Maybe he/she was referring to a different book? Basic knowledge of notation is helpful to know before hand, but this book is useful to anyone who wants to learn to play the pan flute.

Mel Bay's the man!
By Charles A. Hardy
What else can one say about Mel Bay?

Pan pipes are not as easy to play as Zamfir makes it appear. As with harmonicas, proper technique can let you get sharps and flats.

This book will help you get to the point where you can fool others into thinking the pan pipes are easy.
