The Christ Clone Trilogy - Book One: IN HIS IMAGE (Revised & Expanded), by James BeauSeigneur

Two nuclear wars. Three asteroids. Demonic madness that kills one third of the world’s population. Into this, a savior will rise, cloned from Christ. It’s not fiction. It’s prophecy.

The Messiah of the New Age. His coming is prophesied by more than a dozen major religions. Cloned from live cells of Jesus Christ found on the Shroud of Turin, Christopher Goodman was born into the most turbulent time in human history. Mentored by former UN Assistant Secretary-General Robert Milner, Christopher rises in position and power, and displays remarkable wisdom and compassion. But through disjointed bits of dreams that sometimes haunt him, Christopher reveals significant troubling errors in the biblical record of Jesus’ life.

Soon the reason for Robert Milner’s interest in Christopher becomes clear: the world is about to undergo a time of destruction and chaos darker than any in history, with impending nuclear war merely a faint precursor. Milner explains that without Christopher, humanity will not long survive. Under Christopher’s leadership, however, mankind stands on the threshold of a final great evolutionary leap that will bestow on the human race god-like powers. This is the reason, Milner says, that Christopher was born.

In Israel, an unexpected threat to Christopher’s ascension is growing: two men, possessed of incredible supernatural powers, one claiming to be the 2000-year-old Apostle John, the other an apostate Hasidic rabbi named Saul Cohen. Together, the men lead an outlawed cult of 144,000 followers, each branded with the names Yahweh and Yeshua on their foreheads.

Amazon.com Review
It's the end of life on earth as we know it in this page-turning apocalyptic novel In His Image, the first installment of the Christ Clone Trilogy. Newspaper editor Decker wangles his way onto a scientific expedition that examines the Shroud of Turin, believed by many to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ. When body cells stuck to the shroud are found to be "alive," they are cloned, and the resulting baby, Christopher, changes the course of history. The book is an interesting mix of fact and fiction (when was the last time you read a novel with footnotes?). There are nice touches of humor, and a dollop of prophetic scripture. It's difficult to peg who's "good" and who's "evil," which admirably sustains the suspense. A good edit might have smoothed some of the rough spots, and the use of bold type for emphasis is distracting. However, those less interested in the nuances of fine literature than in a fast-paced thriller will find that this novel covers all the bases. --Cindy Crosby

From Booklist
*Starred Review* BeauSeigneur's In His Image is the first installment of his Christ Clone trilogy, an End Times series that was all but privately published in the late 1990s but that developed a considerable underground following. This is mostly because BeauSeigneur knows how to write, deploying a tough, driving style in perfect cadence. He generates suspense by withholding details. Like a historian of the future, he goes out of his way to show every viewpoint. And, like Tom Clancy, BeauSeigneur throws in technical details about how systems and organizations operate, and since he was formerly a CIA operative, he's persuasive. In His Image begins as an almost scholarly account of scientific examinations of the shroud of Turin in the1970s, all to dissuade you of your disbelief for the cloning of Christopher Goodman from the blood of Christ. Christopher is a bright, lonely kid, entirely sympathetic. You will like this Antichrist. The odd events on the international scene have nothing to do with him, and what happens at the United Nations is entirely reasonable given the circumstances. The sequels are Birth of an Age (terrifying plagues, each given detailed, almost dispassionate, scientifically plausible explanations) and Acts of God (the reign of the Antichrist and the Battle of Armageddon). It's a shame BeauSeigneur had to wait so long for the kind of exposure publication by Warner Books will give him, but on the other hand, the paranoia he evokes is a perfect fit for these times of religious hatred and political terror.

Imaginative, Transporting Novel from James BeauSeigneur
By Reviewer
Whenever a novel can capture your imagination and draw you completely into the world that exists between it's covers, it is an exhilarating experience. With "In His Image," the first book of "The Christ Clone" trilogy, author James BeauSeigneur has done just that. A highly imaginative and extremely well written novel of epic proportions, it covers a span of over forty years, during which time the reader is transported from the world as we know it today, to the very dawning of the "New Age." The story unfolds with a ring of authenticity that makes it a compelling read, with a scope reminiscent of Asimov's classic, "Foundation."
The story begins in 1978, as journalist Decker Hawthorne attaches himself to a large contingent of American scientists who are off to Italy to conduct tests on the Shroud of Turin, long believed to be the burial cloth of Christ, in an effort to establish it's authenticity. The first two chapters are a dramatization of that expedition, and BeauSeigneur draws upon the published reports of the actual scientists involved, seamlessly weaving fact and fiction together to create a riveting narrative, much as Michael Crichton did with "Eaters of the Dead." He uses footnotes to reference factual information, which gives the reader the best of both worlds-- documentation of an important historical event, but delivered within the context, and with the flow, of a well written novel-- rather than in the dry, academic tone of a text book.
The third chapter jumps ahead ten years-- the first of many transitions that encompass months or years, a technique effectively employed throughout the book by BeauSeigneur-- and here the story begins in earnest. During the `78 expedition to Turin, due to time constraints the scientists were limited as to the number and types of tests they were able to conduct; now, Harry Goodman, a member of the `78 team, has reexamined some of the samples taken from the shroud and has uncovered what he believes is the most important discovery since Columbus discovered the New World. A phone call later, Decker Hawthorne is with his old colleague Goodman, who promises Decker exclusive rights to what will be an evolving story, if he will agree to provide Goodman with confidentiality, and publish his report only when-- according to Goodman-- the time is right. And it's only the beginning of an extraordinary story that will sweep you along without pause to the very end.
BeauSeigneur brings his characters vividly to life, and with a depth that along the way offers some real insight into human nature. Those who populate his world are very real, and there are those with whom you will readily identify, for he presents a far-ranging and diverse cross section of humanity that reflects a number of attitudes and perspectives. There are, indeed, heroes and villains, but BeauSeigneur makes them believable and avoids any cliches or stereotypes, which gives them the necessary credibility. You'll recognize some of these people; they're friends and co-workers, neighbors and acquaintances, and some of celebrity. All of those who make up the very real world in which we live.
BeauSeigneur facilitates entry into this world and makes suspension of disbelief easy, by grounding even the most extreme episodes in reality. He does this through the occasional use of footnotes, which elucidate facts, or supply the reader with context through specific passages from the Bible. His most effective means, however, is by establishing a frame of reference for the reader, in which actual places and events become an integral part of the story. The U.N., for example, is central to the story, as is the Wailing Wall in Israel. The conflicts and cataclysms that ensue, as well as the politics and parties involved, are all realistically rendered, and BeauSeigneur keeps it all flowing steadily forward with a brisk pace and impeccable transitions, through which suspense builds so rapidly that at times you will not be able to turn the pages quickly enough. There is one section involving strategic issues that gets a bit technical, a la Tom Clancy, but it affords the reader a basis of understanding that later becomes invaluable in appreciating the full impact of certain incidents that come to pass, and BeauSeigneur's approach is similar to what Melville did with "Moby Dick." By the time the whale breaches, you know the importance of the harpooner, as well as that of the rest of the sailors in the longboat.
In the final analysis, "In His Image" is a stirring, thought-provoking novel that will no doubt induce you to take pause and reflect upon the state of the world around you. Thoroughly entertaining and at times profound, it will literally take you to another place and another time.

A Stephen King-esque Look at the End of the Age
By Sunny
THE STAND was the first Stephen King novel I read. The similarities to biblical prophecy in that marvelous story are hard to miss for even the novice student of the book of Revelation. That fact played a large role in my interest in The Stand. The book is so enthralling that even when I became aware that King had veered a long way from the scriptural story, I didn't really care. And after all, no other writer had managed to figure out what all those seals, and trumpets, and vials of the Apocalypse were either.
Continuing my interest in the subject, I have read a number of other books in the same general vein. Or perhaps I should say that I started to read several. The problem is that every writer that tries to stick with the original concept of end-times prophecy is also out to force a load of preaching down your throat. Their stories are less coherent that comic books and they seem to think their relationship with God makes up for the fact that they can't write.
I have very recently found an exception to this rule and I wanted to recommend it. It's THE CHRIST CLONE TRILOGY by James BeauSeigneur. BeauSeigneur does an incredible job of story telling while sticking very exactly to biblical prophecy. He even blends in prophecies from several other religions! An interesting difference is that in THE CHRIST CLONE TRILOGY the antichrist/Flagg character plays his role and tell his lies so well that you can't help but sorta be pulling for him even though you know he's the bad guy. Or is he?

Fundamentalist View of the Apocalyspe
By Jeffrey Leach
The back cover of this book tells us that the author, James BeauSeigneur, was a former intelligence analyst for the National Security Agency, a newspaper publisher, a political science professor, a contender for a seat in Congress in 1980 (he ran against Al Gore), and a writer of numerous speeches, manuals, and articles. What this description doesn't tell us is that BeauSeigneur is a fundamentalist Christian as well. This is important to note because this series of books, of which "In His Image" is the first, is a fundamentalist Christian view of the end of the world. Some people will have a problem with a fundamentalist based view of the apocalypse. They shouldn't worry, however, because these books are exciting and about as "unputdownable" as you can possibly imagine.
"In His Image" introduces us to the main character of the trilogy, Decker Hawthorne. Decker is a publisher and writer for a small paper in Tennessee when he gets a call from one of his buddies, Tom Donafin, about a scientific expedition that is planned to examine the Shroud of Turin. One of the scientists involved in the trip, Harry Goodman, was Decker's mentor years before when Decker was a pre-med student. Decker ingratiates himself with Goodman and manages to involve himself in the expedition. By going on the trip, Decker starts a voyage that will place him at center stage in the battle of good versus evil. Scientific tests on the shroud captures some dermal cells from Jesus, and Goodman clones them and places them in a woman's womb (a Mexican servant named Maria, of course). The result is Christopher Goodman, an exact replica of Jesus Christ. His birth sets off a series of events that are taken right out of the New Testament. BeauSeigneur spices up the biblical story with the adventures of Decker. Decker is hired by a big name publisher and sent to Israel with Tom Donafin, where the two witness the destruction of the Wailing Wall and suffer through three years of captivity in Lebanon. Shortly after their release (through an unusual involvement with Christopher), Decker's family, along with 1/5 of the world's population, dies in the "Disaster," and the story starts to zoom.
I am not really giving anything away with the above story description. Most of it appears on the back cover of the book. Needless to say, there are tons of other characters and events that interact and help set up the story in ways that reappear later in the series.
What is impressive about this series, and what makes it stand out from other books with similar themes is the artful way BeauSeigneur weaves religion, science, history, and politics into a realistic and coherent pattern. At the beginning of the book, BeauSeigneur acknowledges many scientists and theologians for help in creating his tale. Some of the characters in the book, at least during the Shroud of Turin trip, are real people. This emphasis on real events, people, and religious and scientific themes gives the book certain credibility. When Harry Goodman discusses cloning techniques, BeauSeigneur brings in the theories of Nobel Prize winner Francis Crick to provide an explanation for the origin of Jesus.
I found the religious aspects of the story fascinating, even though I am not a Christian. BeauSeigneur has one of his characters, Joshua Rosen, explain a theory about the Ark of the Covenant that is absolutely mesmerizing. Rosen brings in biblical passages, conspiracy theories about the Knights Templar, and obscure writings from apocryphal texts to create a theory that makes you nod your head in agreement, even though it is highly unlikely. New Age religions are presented as the wave of the future, through the characters of Bob Milner and Alice Bernley. These New Age elements work through the United Nations to bring about a global system of government.
I guess my only concern with the trilogy is the lack of character development. It may be successfully argued that the main character of the book is the apocalypse, but there is no reason to ignore the other characters. BeauSeigneur rarely provides adequate descriptions of his characters beyond their words and actions. It is an uneven process; Decker's internal thoughts are described, but others are completely ignored. It is also difficult to sympathize with characters when you have no idea what they look like.
Get out there and pick these three books up as quickly as you can. I originally bought "In His Image" without getting the others. I finally picked up the other two when I realized they might go out of print before I read the first one. I am glad I did this because I wanted to start reading the next book right after I finished the previous one. These books are so engrossing that the pages fly by at lightening speed. I think I finished the whole trilogy in about three days. Get going!

School Book Replacement
By crisco227
I purchased this book as a replacement for a stolen school book. It's reasonable price attracted me, it was described as good condition and I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived to find that it is more like new condition. I'm sure it is in much better condition than the one it is replacing! I expect the teacher to be more than happy with it. Thank you

A student's review of the textbook.
By Sir Captain Noobhead
I have to offer a counterpoint compared to Mr Baumgardner's self review of this textbook.

I am a third year psychology student at a university located in the midwest. We use this book as our standard text in our 400-level course on positive psychology. Over the course of this semester, I have read this book cover to cover and used it extensively to study for tests, etc.

Let's start with the positives.
1) This textbook has excellent organization, the topics are very distinct, and the headings and subheadings let you know exactly what each section and paragraph is going to be about.
2) Many studies are talked about extensively, and this book is very good for research purposes. The author has a very good handle on scientific method, and certainly knows what he is talking about.
3) The bolded vocabulary words are very helpful and gives a recap of important concepts.

Now the negatives.
1) I'll flat out say it. This book is very dry. Even though it's supposed to be a book on "positive" psychology, I often felt bored and miserable while reading through it. While it is very informative, I feel that most sections are simply -- describe a concept, and talk about three or four different studies and give evidence, etc. The main point of the book is not to convince students that the concepts are true, we don't doubt that. However, ideas and theories should be taught in a way that they become relate-able. I highly recommend following the style of Robert Cialdini's Influence, which tries to teach concepts in the form of interesting stories, examples, and anecdotes.
2) Put some pictures, charts, graphs and colours in the book! The majority of the 300+ pages of this book is in black and white text. I know we are college students, but some formatting and visuals would make this book much more interesting.
3) This text is very wordy. A lot of the concepts can be described using a third of the words. An idea should be presented once and clearly communicated as opposed to repeated in convoluted ways three or four times.

Overall, this book teaches some very relevant ideas and concepts on positive psychology, but the presentation is lackluster and bland. I look forward to future editions of the book when some of these issues can be addressed.

Zaregoto, Book 1: The Kubikiri Cycle, by Nisioisin

It’s the vacation of a lifetime, a trip to a remote island filled with geniuses–and murder.

On Wet Crow’s Feather Island, a tiny speck in the Sea of Japan, lives Akagami Iria, the exiled daughter of a powerful family. Born into great wealth, she was a princess of the highest pedigree–until she was cut off by the leader of the Akagami Foundation. For the last five years, she’s lived on Feather Island with her maids. But she hasn’t been alone. She has invited the best minds Japan has to offer to come and stay with her.

And so nineteen-year-old college student Ii-chan and his best friend, computer genius Kunagisa Tomo, find themselves as Iria’s guests at her elaborate mansion. Surrounded by fascinating women–a chef, a fortune-teller, a scholar, and an artist, not to mention his own friend Tomo–Ii-chan is feeling a little overmatched intellectually. But the sudden discovery of a grisly murder sends the island into shock. And Ii-chan discovers that he does possess a bit of genius: the ability to discover what is real and what is fake . . . who is who they claim to be–and who is a killer.

From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up—Written by a manga-novel author, Zaregoto uses a manga style in the format of a novel. Ii, a 19-year-old college student, accompanies his friend Kunagisa Tomo, a computer engineering genius, to Wet Crow's Feather Island, home of wealthy exile Akagami Iria, who surrounds herself with the best and the brightest. The island's other guests include a painter, a fortune-teller, a chef, and an all-purpose genius, as well as live-in maids and other caretakers. The geniuses bicker regularly and immerse themselves in expressing their mutual hatred for each other. On the third evening of Ii's visit, a powerful earthquake draws the tense discussion short. Ii and Kunagisa discover Ibuki Kanami, the painter, beheaded in her studio. Akagami Iria takes control of the murder investigation, refusing to call the police, and rumor surfaces that this crime is far from the first, and could very well not be the last. Zaregoto reads like a combination of Fantasy Island and Clue, and as it continues, readers can't help but wonder if Akagami Iria has set up this dangerous game as a way to entertain herself in her exile. With no graphics to rely on, the story suffers from an overwhelming amount of dialogue but still offers a challenging mystery that will keep readers guessing. Libraries with manga fans craving something beyond the typical graphic novel and Japanophiles searching for something new should consider this for purchase, as well as Hiroshi Ishizaki's Chain Mail: Addicted to You (Tokyopop, 2007).—Sarah Krygier, Solano County Library, Fairfield, CA

Elementary, my dear Iria.
By Tracy
If you aren't into illustrated covers (or Manga, for that matter) don't let the cover throw you. You need not fear harmless little Kunagisa Tomo or her blue hair (mosty). There will be so much going on in the course of this novel, you'll be far too busy to notice.

Likewise, if you are not accustomed to Japanese names, the book title and character names may seem intimidating. Don't let it get to you! You're a serious reader. No sweat!

Wet Crow's Feather, with its expansive mansion, is the exclusive island home of wealthy and powerful Akagami Iria, an heiress of 'highest pedigree'. And if she invites you to come, you get to vacation for free! Hell, she'll even pay you for your time! A great deal! There's only one little catch: only geniuses need apply. If you're the undisputed best at what you do -- a master artist; a savant hacker; a culinary prodigy -- or if your name has frequently been attached to words like 'laureate', 'Nobel', or 'paradigm shift' your cheque may already be in the mail.

Iria-san is something of a collector. Since she never leaves her island home, what better way to keep from getting bored than to surround herself with the world's best and brightest? And why not? She has money to burn. But given that only geniuses make the grade, college student Ii finds himself feeling out of place. He's accompanied his often delicate (but always freakishly brilliant) friend Kunagisa. *She's* an infamous computer genius; *his* presence is merely tolerated.

Maybe Ii is much more ordinary than the illustrious women he finds himself amidst -- an exiled heiress; a famed scholar; a master chef; a celebrated artist; an uncannily accurate fortune-teller/mindfreak; and, well, then there's Kunagisa.

However, when heads start to roll, the question isn't only 'who dunnit', but who among them possesses the skills to solve murder among geniuses?

If you like math-logic, murder mysteries, plot-twists, or interesting characters, you may want to take a serious look at this fun and entertaining book!

by Matthew Reeves

Some writers are talented, some writers are addictive, some writers are renowned, and some writers manage to compile all these things and more into a neatly wrapped package that sells incredibly well. I say "some" because, well, let's face it, these types of authors are few and far between. If you want to shrink the list even smaller, try listing authors that managed to do all of the above with their publishing debut.

When I picked up Zaregoto, I knew very little about its author NisiOisin. I had only read a short work of his in a literary anthology once, and though not my cup of tea, his writing had proven captivating regardless. When I discovered that the American publisher Del Rey had brought out a mystery novel of his, I was very interested. Having read and loved the Japanese mystery novel GOSICK, I had high hopes that yet another young adult author from Japan could possibly breathe more life into an admittedly fading genre of the YA market.

The story of Zaregoto is told from the viewpoint of Ii-chan, a nineteen year old college student accompanying one of his friends, Kunagisa Tomo, a recognized computer genius, as she travels to Wet Crow's Feather Island to meet the rich and exiled daughter of the powerful Akagami Foundation. She, like a number of other specially gifted people from Japan, has received an invitation to come to the private island estate of Akagami Iria. Apparently, the exiled princess is bored and she wants to gather the brightest minds the country has to offer to spend time with her. Though Ii-chan wasn't invited, Kunagisa brings him along with her to the island anyway. There they discover a host of other talented individuals that all but perfectly match the definition of a "genius". In fact, with so many of these geniuses walking around that range in skills from cooking, painting, computers and even fortune telling, it begins to make Ii-chan feel a bit overwhelmed intellectually. He seems to be the only `average' individual around.

But then the unthinkable occurs. One of the guests is found dead after an earthquake - beheaded. With everyone a suspect, there's no knowing for sure who they can trust. As one murder follows another, Ii-chan discovers he just might have what it takes to figure out the truth - that is of course, if he isn't the next one to die.

Zaregoto is a thrilling, edge of your seat, logic bending tale of murder and the human psyche. Filled with a unique and varied cast of characters, excellent narration and abounding plot twists even long after the mystery has been solved, it is without a doubt a phenomenal read.

From beginning till end, this is a book that keeps you guessing at every page. Readers won't need much time to realize that NisiOisin has a literary style all his own. Whether it be the strange name choices (even by Japanese standards), or the narrative structure, this is a story that is both spellbinding and challenging. Though the book is obviously targeting the YA demographic, it is anything but "easy reading." NisiOisin's writing requires the full attention of his readers. Every conversation and every detail could be a clue or point for character growth.

Zaregoto takes a slower more methodical approach to the genre in the tradition of many of the classics. The mystery is gradually built one layer at a time and even the smallest of details is given adequate measure to be noticed. One of NisiOisin's greatest assets is his ability to write as much as he does and still make every word count.

When it comes to a mystery novel, the ending can and usually is considered by many to be the most pivotal point of the work. It's whether you discover if the author has what it takes to tie everything together in a way you never could see coming or fails miserably. Thankfully, I'm glad to report that Zaregoto not only succeeds in creating a shocking finale for the novel, but also in touching on the smaller more easily overlooked aspects of the plot that dealt with individual characters.

As with any piece of literature that is translated into another language, the adaptation quality can vary greatly; ranging from amazing to terrible. Through my reading I could find no noticeable faults with either the work or its adaptation. For the most part, this is a spectacular translation by Del Rey, especially when considering how challenging a writer such as NisiOisin must have proven to be.

In conclusion, some writers are talented, some writers are addictive, some writers are renowned, and some writers manage to compile all these things and more into a neatly wrapped package that sells incredibly well. If you haven't guessed by now, NisiOisin is just such an author. Not only was Zaregoto his publishing debut, it proved to be the first in a long series of books that would mark his still successful literary career in Japan. Now that his works are being slowly brought into the English market, one can only hope that more people will take the time to discover his unique sense of storytelling.

Zaregoto is Excellent!
By David Cummins
I bought this book after reading Nisioisin's Death Note: Another Note, and just like that book, this one is fast-paced and very clever. The writing style is smart, quick and to the point, these characters don't beat around the bush much. The characters are incredibly vivid and unique. The Japanese names took a bit of getting used to, and the lack of "He said" or "She said" in the dialogue made some passages of extended dialogue just a little confusing to follow. (There were a couple times I had to back up a little to figure out which character was talking). All in all, however, the fact that Nisioisin cut a lot of that makes the dialogue flow faster and more naturally.
This Japanese author is brilliant and I can't wait for Book 2 to be released in English.

Mathematical Methods of Physics (2nd Edition), by Jon Mathews, Robert L. Walker

This well-known text treats a variety of essential topics, ranging in difficulty from simple differential equations to group theory. Physical intuition, rather than rigor, is used to develop mathematical facility, and the authors have kept the text at a level consistent with the needs and abilities of upper-division students. This book covers subjects which are often ignored in traditional texts; for example, statistics and the fitting of experimental data, dispersion relations and super-convergence relations and the group SU(3).

A rewarding book
By pnmti
I would not say Mathews & Walker [MW] is better than other books such as Arfken & Weber or Boas. But I recommend this book because it is VERY DIFFERENT than the others. If Arfken is like a reference, MW is like lecture notes. It does not cover every bits and pieces --- so as another reviewer mentioned below, MW is not for those who are not familiar with Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, and Complex Variables (these subjects are almost the core mathematical courses which a physics student must take). But for those who have some knowledge of the above mentioned mathematics, by reading MW carefully, you will be nourished with incredible amount of mathematical insight that physicists use.

Also, you will be happy to know that this book was evolved from the course originally taught by Feynman while he was at Cornell and was still a young professor just come out from Los Alamos. Feynman later said that from the experience at Los Alamos he knew which mathematical methods worked and was useful, and he tried to teach those skills in his course. MW is still full of that spirit.

The book is relatively slim than other Mathematical Methods books and really fun to read. You will find small but valuable facts scattered throughout the book which could not be found anywhere else.

Friendly book for the student, working engineer and layman
By A Customer
I was hesitant in getting this book because of it's publishing date. Not to say other 'classics' are not good (many are great), but some of the older mathematical books seem to pride themselves on being esoteric.
I bought the book and happy I did. I only wish I had it in grad school. It is many times easier to read than Arfken, and has many useful examples. Now that I'm out of school, I refer to this book in figuring out how to solve (approximately) some of the equations that I encounter in the workforce.
For the self-study (or refresher) this book is easy to read and follow.
The book interestingly starts off with differential equations, and about a quarter into the book, goes into vectors and matrices. The continuity of the book is great, since it works it's way into eigenfunctions (Green's theorem). This book continues it's development into other areas of mathematical physics such as differential geometry (~20pgs) and group theory (~40 pages).

Concise, but very useful
By JAMES D MEANS
Most mathematical physics textbooks are huge tomes (Arfken), multiple volume sets (Courant and Hilbert), or both (Morse and Feshbach). This book covers the essentials in a reader-friendly way without pages and pages of exposition. The discussion of integral equations with separable kernels is a perfect example, rather than going on and on with the theory, Mathews and Walker just give an example that illustrates the technique; this approach makes it easier to follow than the rest. The book was originally based on lectures by Feynman, and his mark is apparent on it. If you just want to see how to solve problems and aren't interested in long-winded discussions of the range of applicability of a technique, this is your book.
