Consider the Paper and the Quality of Shipping Before Ordering
By Ukknight
My book arrived damaged, which was disappointing. It was in a plastic bag and the cover and some of the pages were quite damaged, both inside and out. I have frequently ordered books from overseas and haven't ever had a problem before. The pictures are very pretty and I love that there is a colored picture to guide my learning to color flowers. However, and to me, most importantly, the paper is horrible. It is markedly thinner than a Creative Haven Coloring book, and I think even thinner than a regular Dover book. If you print your pics on to nicer paper, you won't mind, but I like to color in the book. I have the exotic flower book coming from a different seller and I'll be interested how they ship it and in what condition it arrives. I'm sorry to say that when I add the damaged condition and the horrible paper, I can only give it 2 stars.

Great buy would definitely buy another book from Kew
By Amazon Customer
One of the coolest adult coloring books out there! What makes this coloring book different are the colored pictures in the book that are there for you to try your professional hand at matching and shading the same colors! I bought a professional 120 Blick colored pencil set and now I have a chance to prove my skills! Great buy would definitely buy another book from Kew!

My second Kew book
By Sheila P
This is my second Kew Gardens book. I'm a high-intermediate colorist and I love coloring flowers. I also have the Kew Gardens Exotic Plants Coloring Book which is more challenging the this one but this book let's me do a picture faster because it's a bit simpler. I wish the paper was a little better, but it isn't bad either. All in all, I'm pleased with these books

Excellent
By RootedHand
This is an excellent resource for rootworkers. The author compiled a lot of great information on Moses including history, drawings, and references to biblical sources. There are seals and spells for many purposes and a wonderful chapter called "The Great Voodoo Man of the Bible". I highly reccomend this book.

Over the past forty years, recognition has become the dominant mode of negotiation and decolonization between the nation-state and Indigenous nations in North America. The term “recognition” shapes debates over Indigenous cultural distinctiveness, Indigenous rights to land and self-government, and Indigenous peoples’ right to benefit from the development of their lands and resources.

In a work of critically engaged political theory, Glen Sean Coulthard challenges recognition as a method of organizing difference and identity in liberal politics, questioning the assumption that contemporary difference and past histories of destructive colonialism between the state and Indigenous peoples can be reconciled through a process of acknowledgment. Beyond this, Coulthard examines an alternative politics—one that seeks to revalue, reconstruct, and redeploy Indigenous cultural practices based on self-recognition rather than on seeking appreciation from the very agents of colonialism.

Coulthard demonstrates how a “place-based” modification of Karl Marx’s theory of “primitive accumulation” throws light on Indigenous–state relations in settler-colonial contexts and how Frantz Fanon’s critique of colonial recognition shows that this relationship reproduces itself over time. This framework strengthens his exploration of the ways that the politics of recognition has come to serve the interests of settler-colonial power.

In addressing the core tenets of Indigenous resistance movements, like Red Power and Idle No More, Coulthard offers fresh insights into the politics of active decolonization.

"While Red Skin, White Masks focuses on indigenous experiences in Canada, it is immediately applicable to understanding the false promise of recognition, liberal pluralism, and reconciliation at the heart of colonial relationships between indigenous peoples and nation-states elsewhere. Sabrina’s life is hard work. When she’s not performing her myriad duties as The Gregorio Hotel’s youngest Assistant Manager, she’s working on her law degree at Georgetown University. There’s little time (or money) for leisure, but that’s okay with her. Sabrina is driven to succeed despite her disadvantaged upbringing. When a new VIP checks in to the hotel’s ridiculously extravagant and expensive penthouse suite and the manager is out, the task of his personal welcome falls to her. What should have been a simple meet and greet takes an unexpected turn towards something much more personal! Equally unexpected is the reaction she feels deep down for this tall, dark, and handsome stranger. How can she avoid offending this important guest, earning the ire of her boss, and still not compromise herself personally?

For Sheik Samir, official management welcomes are yet another tedious and perfunctory activity. Of course the manager will provide anything he requires - what else? But the petite blond beauty that approaches him is anything but expected. He is intrigued as much by her appearance as her straightforward manner - with none of the deference that he is used to from those that serve him. Samir’s interest only increases as Sabrina attempts to politely refuse him. He is certain that she underestimates both his will and his resolve!

Dumb. The only good news...it was free.
By LvrOfBks
What isn't wrong with this book? Trite. Boring. Worst of all it is just dumb.
I can read the occasional fluff book. The fun chick lit. I hate, hate, hate when authors write dumb nonsense and try to slap it together and sell it as if it were a real book. This book is super short, really a long story.
**spoiler alerts***

The penthouse is the "largest and most expensive in the Washington DC area" and she is the assistant manager of the hotel.... and she is a law student at Georgetown. She is also socially inept, can't talk about sex, oh and virgin as well. she must have something going on to get an assistant manager job and the best hotel in DC. Right?

So, short story short, she gets manipulated into having "dinner" with the sheik. She finally puts her foot down by.... demanding to know if the sheik actually called the hotel chef and bartender to order the dinner himself or did he make his staff do it. Uh, this is the dinner he is forcing her to attend with him. What?

So on her "break" she goes to dinner....and has sex for first time. EVERYONE in hotel knows. They question her about the next day. She is annoyed by the questions and remarks that she is the youngest assistant manager at the hotel and "she wasn't going to sully her outstanding professional reputation by listening, or even acknowledging, the questions on the minds of every other staff member she passed."

Holy hell.

Talking about sleeping with a hotel guest 2 hours after meeting him, while on duty is sullying her reputation but actually having sex with said guest is not sullying her reputation?

Of course he pursues her. Guess what happens next to the virginal, naive law student/hotel manager. Guess.
Yes! She has lots of unprotected sex (cause she is too overwhelmed by her feelings to pay attention to protection) and gets pregnant.

How does she discover she is pregnant? Well while feeling sorry for herself (cause the sheik wanted to pay for law school and a new apartment and give her money like she is some kind of whore) she goes to her old nasty home (drunk mom bad childhood...blah, blah) she gets unexpectedly hungry so she walks two miles (yeah 2 miles) to a grocery store (while thinking about how stupid her plan was to go the old house) and buys... saltines and bologna. Weird. Right? She eats, walks and contemplates her SIX WEEK "relationship" with sheik. Throws up and nearly passes out and is saved by....guess...guess... Yes! The sheik.

So in Washington DC, in a poor neighborhood he saves her and then has a helicopter land. In some open field. In the middle of DC. Okay.

Then the author writes one the stupidest sentences I have ever read...

"When the helicopter landed in the open field, he carried Sabrina through the grass, unconcerned about possible snakes or other creatures. His main goal was to get her safe once again."

So he is not worried about dangerous snakes or other "creatures" (in DC?) he is only worried about her safety? Ummm. Did the author even read that sentence as she wrote it?

BTW.. she is "sleeping" from the time he saved her on the DC street, through the helicopter ride and of course aboard his private plane. Yup. 12 hours she slept... through all of that, not one moment of consciousness. Just sleep, sleep, sleep. Handy.

She wakes up in his country. Oh. no. She has a paper due the next day. Oh. no. An exam. Oh. no. A baby. What? Marry you? Be a princess and be fabulously wealthy? Live in an Arab country? (presumably with that sheik nonsense). Is it safe? Does she have to give up her citizenship? How do they treat women? Will she be the only wife? She considered her options...go back to school, work full time and be a single mom or stay here with the prince and have babies.

Of course. Babies and princess win.

Beyond stupid. I guess I can be thankful that the author did not 50 Shades it up.
Waste of time. Waste of money. Waste of reading. Waste of digital ink.
I want back my 20 minutes.

A distasteful beginning
By North
Spoiler Alert !

I found the beginning of the story distasteful :
Sabrina, a law student, also works full time as an assistant manager in a luxury hotel. When the manager is unavailable, Sabrina meets a new guest, Samir, the head of state of some unnamed country. Samir falls in lust and demands that Sabrina have supper (and more) with him.

Sabrina does not want to go but is pushed by every hotel employee to attend Samir's wishes. I felt they were all pimping her. I also found in bad taste the reference from the concierge that he would be able to provide Samir with company for the night if it was required. Did we really came to the point that prostitutes are OK ? Not that they're in any way necessary as Sabrina then proceeds to bed Samir, whom she met all of three hours ago, losing her virginity in the process.

The middle part of the novella is fine. Sabrina gets her pluck back and Samir starts to transform into a reasonable human being. The ending, unfortunately, brings back all the arrogant aspects of Samir's character.

Meh...It's ok. ***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***
By Amazon Customer
The story itself was good. The H and h were just alright. I was irritated by the fact that the h let all the hotel employees push her to compromise her own values and what she believed to be right. It felt a little disjointed after their night together, when she's back at the hotel. At no point did it explain she left in the middle of the night or anything. When she was upset that everyone "knew" what she had done, I thought it was because she was wearing the same clothes as she had the night before. It wasn't until she mentions going home to shower "again" that I realized she went home at all. And then up until Samir (the H, the Sheikh) mentions her leaving in the middle of the night, I didn't know that either. Especially since she mentions not eating the breakfast that was offered(?). I don't know, maybe I read that part wrong. The end I had a hard time understanding because of the h's actions concerning her schooling, but I guess maybe because of the situation she finds herself in, it is the only choice left to her.

I am one for recommending folks read a book and form their own opinions. For having been free, I can't complain that I wasted my money. And it wasn't THAT bad, so it wasn't really a waste of my time either. I just wish the characters had been more to my liking.

Not bad but...
By Dan M Oz
I'm about to sit my FRACS (orth) in Australia, and ordered this book in the hope it would provide some practice for our MCQ's (though ours are slightly different, with a stem followed by 5 true or false answers). This book is OK, but I found the level to be a little easy, and there are a few mistakes in the answers' reasoning at times. It may have been more use to me a few months earlier in my revision to help cement the basics.

An “extraordinary” and “monumental” exposé of Big Oil from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Coll (The Washington Post)

In Private Empire Steve Coll investigates the largest and most powerful private corporation in the United States, revealing the true extent of its power. ExxonMobil’s annual revenues are larger than the economic activity in the great majority of countries. In many of the countries where it conducts business, ExxonMobil’s sway over politics and security is greater than that of the United States embassy. In Washington, ExxonMobil spends more money lobbying Congress and the White House than almost any other corporation. Yet despite its outsized influence, it is a black box.

Private Empire pulls back the curtain, tracking the corporation’s recent history and its central role on the world stage, beginning with the Exxon Valdez accident in 1989 and leading to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The action spans the globe, moving from Moscow, to impoverished African capitals, Indonesia, and elsewhere in heart-stopping scenes that feature kidnapping cases, civil wars, and high-stakes struggles at the Kremlin. At home, Coll goes inside ExxonMobil’s K Street office and corporation headquarters in Irving, Texas, where top executives in the “God Pod” (as employees call it) oversee an extraordinary corporate culture of discipline and secrecy.

The narrative is driven by larger than life characters, including corporate legend Lee “Iron Ass” Raymond, ExxonMobil’s chief executive until 2005. A close friend of Dick Cheney’s, Raymond was both the most successful and effective oil executive of his era and an unabashed skeptic about climate change and government regulation.. This position proved difficult to maintain in the face of new science and political change and Raymond’s successor, current ExxonMobil chief executive Rex Tillerson, broke with Raymond’s programs in an effort to reset ExxonMobil’s public image. The larger cast includes countless world leaders, plutocrats, dictators, guerrillas, and corporate scientists who are part of ExxonMobil’s colossal story.

The first hard-hitting examination of ExxonMobil, Private Empire is the masterful result of Coll’s indefatigable reporting. He draws here on more than four hundred interviews; field reporting from the halls of Congress to the oil-laden swamps of the Niger Delta; more than one thousand pages of previously classified U.S. documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act; heretofore unexamined court records; and many other sources. A penetrating, newsbreaking study, Private Empire is a defining portrait of ExxonMobil and the place of Big Oil in American politics and foreign policy.

Coll employs language that’s plain, clear, and free of accusation. Though some of the details recounted across the sprawling narrative of Private Empire are outrageous, the reporting is deep and fair. — Coral Davenport

Review
“ExxonMobil has met its match in Coll, an elegant writer and dogged reporter… extraordinary… monumental.” --THE WASHINGTON POST

“Fascinating… Private Empire is a book meticulously prepared as if for trial, a lawyerly accumulation of information that lets the facts speak for themselves… a compelling and elucidatory work.” --BLOOMBERG

“Private Empire is meticulous, multi-angled and valuable… Mr. Coll’s prose sweeps the earth like an Imax camera.”
— Dwight Garner, THE NEW YORK TIMES

"ExxonMobil has cut a ruthless path through the Age of Oil. Yet intense secrecy has kept one of the world's largest companies a mystery, until now. Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power is a masterful study of Big Oil's biggest player… Coll's in-depth reporting, buttressed by his anecdotal prose, make Private Empire a must-read. Consider Private Empire a sequel of sorts to The Prize, Daniel Yergin's Pulitzer-winning history of the oil industry… Coll's portrait of ExxonMobil is both riveting and appalling… Yet Private Empire is not so much an indictment as a fascinating look into American business and politics. With each chapter as forceful as a New Yorker article, the book abounds in Dickensian characters.”
— SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

"Coll makes clear in his magisterial account that Exxon is mighty almost beyond imagining, producing more profit than any American company in the history of profit, the ultimate corporation in 'an era of corporate ascendancy.' This history of its last two decades is therefore a revealing history of our time, a chronicle of the intersection between energy and politics."
--Bill McKibben, NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS

"Groundbreaking... Masterful as a corporate portrait, Private Empire gushes with narrative."
— AMERICAN PROSPECT

Fascinating!
By Graybeard
This is a fascinating, educational book that provides glimpses into selected notable episodes during a 21-year period in the life of oil giant Exxon Mobil Corporation, starting with the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska in 1989 and ending with BP's Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The book provides insights into the company's corporate culture; some of the company's executives and other employees; the company's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats; some of the entities it interacts with at home and abroad; the nature of those interactions; and the macroenvironmental forces it must contend with.

The book's eye-catching title is what drew me to the book in the first place, but before I was even halfway through the book it was clear that the title was wildly inaccurate and probably just was marketing overreach by the publisher or the author in an effort to drum up sales. Far from its being an empire -- even metaphorically -- Exxon Mobil, as portrayed in the book, is a battle-hardened survivor, a company that continually must fight or adapt, as appropriate, to remain a successful undertaking and a successful steward of its shareholders' capital.

This book would make for great supplementary reading in a business school course on strategic management.

So much to be told this was a disappointment
By Traveller
I think when I purchased this I was expecting a content similar in style to "The Prize" ,which was a fantastic read and I was terribly wrong and had to grind my way through , finally leaving it hugely disappointed. For such a fascinating subject I found the book to be unnecessarily repetitive with the endless comments about "Bookable Reserves" and hints but no real substance to many of the comments about the corporation's relationship to government. Almost every chapter begins with an inticing storyline which somehow manages to peter out as underlying detail is missed or simply implied but never followed up. The section on Exxon Chemicals is too brief and probably superflous to the rest of the book. The exception to the negative comment is to be found in the detail of the post-Mobil acquisition and the contrasting style of the Mobil worldwide operations, would have appreciated much more information and informed comment.

ExxonMobil is undoubtedly a corporation to be admired and vilified but the book fails to really commit the reader instead it rather numbed me.Both Raymond and Tilleson, bearing in mind the scale of the operation they ran and the results ExxonMobil consistently produced, must be larger than life characters but this fails to come across and there is an incredible lack of detail about any of the key subordinates who drove the corporation forward. Maybe they are just "men in suits" managing endless Powerpoint presentations but that is difficult to believe.

Should be read but do not expect any real insight.

You can't put this book down - It just grabs YOU - 5 STARS !!!!!
By Richard of Connecticut
As a reader you can never really explain it, but a truly great author can make anything come alive while others will put you to sleep. Steve Coll is a Pulitzer Prize winner author of Ghost Wars - the Secret History of the CIA, which is another book you just can't put down. Private Empire is special, and the title is so appropriate, a company that has been in business for over a 100 years. It has seen 19 American Presidents come and go, and yet it remains the dominant energy company in the world, and this book covers the whole story.

There is very little devoted to the early history of the company. As we all probably know John D. Rockefeller created the Standard Oil Trust and when it was broken up by the Trust Busters in the early 20th century, one of the spin-offs was the early ancestor to what is now Exxon which eventually combined with Mobil Oil to form ExxonMobil. Rockefeller controlled 14% of the American economy at one point, and oil has remained our dominant energy source ever since.

What a book, what a story for Exxon is the tale of 20th century America and our country's rise to both prominence and dominance in the world both politically and economically. A company so powerful that it considers itself in many ways a state within a state with an internal security force the equivalent of the Secret Service that guards our President. And why not, Exxon has recruited the best of the retired Secret Service agents to develop, install, and maintain a security shield around this company's behavior and its employees.

The book devotes a chapter to the kidnapping and death of Exxon executive Sidney Reso and how CEO Lee Raymond completely revamped the entire company to ensure that it would not happen again. You will learn about the finest private corporate jet fleet in America, and how the Board of Directors mandated that the CEO would never fly a commercial flight again.

It's absolutely absorbing to study in detail how the company after decades in New York moved its corporate headquarters to Dallas Texas and how the building was designed for secrecy with an inner sanctum within an inner sanctum. It was called the God Pod, and the building was called the Death Star after the Star Wars movies.

Lee Raymond proudly proclaims about his competitors, we are Oil - the rest of you are kids. Nothing is left to chance for the dominant oil company in the world. They don't run the company on emotions, they run it on science and principles as the book points out. It is the relentless pursuit of efficiency, another catchphrase employed by the author.

COMPOSITION of the Book

This tome is over 700 pages spread over 28 chapters with extensive use of footnotes. It is separated into two parts, the first 14 chapters or part I is The End of Easy Oil, while Part II is The Risk Cycle which covers 14 additional chapters.

To truly cover the history of Exxon from the beginning, you would need 1500 to 2000 pages, so the author decided to begin with the Exxon Valdez tragedy. In March of 1989, an Exxon oil tanker traveling through Prince Edward Sound went aground and created an environmental and public relations nightmare for Exxon. The story is covered in detail and the book clearly demonstrates how Lee Raymond who would become CEO in the future used the tragedy to essentially completely revamp Exxon's corporate structure and behavior.

The author also wisely decided to use Lee Raymond as the point man or cornerstone of this book. We see Exxon through Raymond's eyes, and as Raymond says in the book, we see governments come and go. This is an acknowledgment that Exxon thinks and plans for decades at a time, not years.

CONCLUSION

Yes, it is all here. If you are into business biographies, this one is tops. If you are into geopolitical power and how corporations interact with governments including their own government this book is an eye-opener. If you want to get a real feel for what it's like for tens of thousands of people to dedicate themselves to the optimal running of a corporation and very little else, this book may turn you on or turn you off.

Exxon is a demanding master for those who serve, and for those who serve willingly, it makes them rich, and materially they want for nothing. Yes the corporation will absorb your soul and ask everything of you. This is all the more interesting when you consider that all the top people in this company seem to be cut from the same cloth meaning the same religious belief systems, basically Southern colleges, and political beliefs - no left wing partisans need to submit a resume. You simply would not pass the background check.

This reader thought the two chapter headings that best describe the Exxon culture were Chapter 4 - Do you really want us as an enemy, and Chapter 17 I pray for Exxon. The best line in the book was a sentence where Exxon's attitude is described as F_ _ _ you - no apologies, oil is here to stay. This is truly a great read. You don't want to miss it, and you will understand much more about oil, lobbyists, how our government works, and energy that you could have ever possibly wanted to know. Get it today.

Why Orwell Matters, by Christopher Hitchens

In this widely acclaimed biographical essay, Christopher Hitchens assesses the life, the achievements, and the myth of the great political writer and participant George Orwell. In true emulative and contrarian style, Hitchens is both admiring and aggressive, sympathetic yet critical, taking true measure of his subject as hero and problem. Answering both the detractors and the false claimants, Hitchens tears down the façade of sainthood erected by the hagiographers and rebuts the critics point by point. He examines Orwell and his perspectives on fascism, empire, feminism, and Englishness, as well as his outlook on America, a country and culture towards which he exhibited much ambivalence. Whether thinking about empires or dictators, race or class, nationalism or popular culture, Orwell's moral outlook remains indispensable in a world that has undergone vast changes in the fifty years since his death. Combining the best of Hitchens's polemical punch and intellectual elegance in a tightly woven and subtle argument, this book addresses not only why Orwell matters today, but how he will continue to matter in a future, uncertain world.Christopher Hitchens, one of the most incisive minds of our own age, meets Orwell on the page in this provocative encounter of wit, contention and moral truth.

From Publishers Weekly
Vanity Fair and Nation contributor Hitchens passionately defends a great writer from attacks by both right and left, though he also refutes those fans who proclaim his sainthood. George Orwell (1903-1950), a socialist who abhorred all forms of totalitarianism, was, as Hitchens points out, prescient about the "three great subjects of the twentieth century:" imperialism, fascism, and Stalinism. In all things, Orwell's feelings were every bit as visceral as intellectual, and Hitchens devotes some of his best writing to describing Orwell's first-hand experiences with empire in Burma. It was there that he learned to hate racism, bullying and exploitation of the lower classes. "Orwell can be read," notes Hitchens, "as one of the founders of... post-colonialism." Orwell's insights about fascism and Stalinism crystallized in Spain, while he was fighting in the Civil War. Hitchens offers an excellent analysis of the writer's women, both real (his wives) and fictional, to show that the feminist critique of Orwell (that he didn't like strong, brainy women) may be unfair, though Hitchens also points out what feminists have ignored: Orwell's "revulsion for birth control and abortion." Hitchens brilliantly marshals his deep knowledge of Orwell's work. Fans of Orwell will enjoy Hitchens's learned and convincing defense, while those unfamiliar with Orwell may perhaps be induced to return to the source. (Oct.) Forecast: Hitchens has made a splash with recent books (Letters to a Young Contrarian and The Trial of Henry Kissinger). Basic is banking on similar success with a 30,000 first printing.

From Library Journal
Far from being an ordinary biography, this small volume is an in-depth investigation of the essential George Orwell-"the heart on fire and the brain on ice." Hitchens recognizes that Orwell was more than the author of 1984 and Animal Farm. He was a keen critic of Nazism and Stalinism and didn't soften his pictures of them to sell books. His analysis of the grave inequities of those two forms of government is sufficiently acute to apply to the early 21st century's political spectrum. While claiming that Orwell "requires extricating from a pile of saccharine tablets and moist hankies [as] an object of sickly veneration and sentimental over-praise," Hitchens, a columnist for Vanity Fair and the Nation, asserts that in contrast to his many contemporaries who wrote about the era's political issues (e.g., Louis MacNeice, Stephen Spender, and Cecil Day Lewis), "it [is] possible to reprint every single letter, book review and essay composed by Orwell without exposing him to any embarrassment"-a remarkable feat, indeed. The only problem with this study is that it assumes that the reader already knows that Orwell conscientiously overcame his early anti-intellectualism, his dislike of the "dark" people of the English Empire, and his squeamishness about homosexuality-all to become a great humanist. Thus, it is written for readers who have already done their homework. Recommended for large libraries with extensive political science holdings.

From Booklist
George Orwell is one of those rare writers who are both artistic and fluent in world events and politics. His shrewd, indelible novels are continually read and discussed all around the world, but Orwell, uncompromising and independent to the point of penury, didn't reach this pinnacle without adversity or controversy. Hitchens, an author and columnist for the Nation and Vanity Fair, whose combativeness and peppery eloquence are backed by wide-ranging erudition, reasserts Orwell's significance in this impassioned yet pinpoint assessment of the man, his writings, and their reception, which has been by turns sloppily negative or excessively positive. Hitchens dissects in fresh and insightful detail the "extraordinary salience" and ongoing relevance (hence the term Orwellian) of Orwell's complex subjects--imperialism, fascism, Stalinism, nuclear weapons, environmentalism--and parses the prescience that inspired Orwell to invent the expression cold war and foresee many of the global conflicts we're currently experiencing. Moving neatly from political commentary to literary criticism and biography, Hitchens clarifies all that Orwell accomplished and, by extension, affirms literature's unique and essential powers. Entertaining Book by a Tough-Minded Latter-day Disciple
By R. W. Rasband
Remarkably, as the 21st century opens George Orwell's shadow looms larger than ever over the world, undiminished by the end of the Cold War (a phrase which he probably invented). He is increasingly claimed by both Left and Right as one of their own. Two Englishmen now living in America, Andrew Sullivan and Christopher Hitchens, can best claim the mantle of Orwell by virtue of their clearsightedness and ability to cut through cant. Hitchens has written a short, bracing book on why "Animal Farm", "1984", and the collected essays are still essential reading. Orwell was a divided man. He was emotionally a conservative and intellectually a socialist. He was able to live out the contradiction and thus was blessed (or cursed) with the ability to see the big picture. Most of us in our own little lives are opportunists; our social and political views are shaped by what seems to us will allow us to rise in the world. Because of his awareness of his contradictions (and an unusual strength of will or character) Orwell could more closely approach "objectivity" (that noble dream) than most of us.
Hitchens claims that Orwell was right about the three big issues of the 20th century--imperialism, Fascism, and Communism: something almost no other of his contemporaries can claim. In the chapter "Orwell and the Left" Hitchens swiftly eviscerates those critics who see Orwell as a sellout (Including Edward Said, whose blurb approving of Hitchens' earlier work appears prominently on the dust jacket of this one.) In "Orwell and the Right" he establishes that Orwell did not advocate mindless aggression against the Communists. Orwell attacked James Burnham for his pessimism and Hitchens says that Orwell didn't want a nuclear first-strike against the Soviets as so many did--it would have killed many of the people who made the successful peaceful revolution against Communism 40 years later. Perhaps the most important chapter in this book is "Deconstructing the Post-Modernist: Orwell and Transparency" in which Hitchens explains Orwell's abiding concern with "objective truth" and exposes the bad faith of the deconstructionists. (A disbelief in demonstratable truth can cover an awful lot of sins.)
Hitchens has made a lot of news the past few years with his arguments with his friends on the Left. He detests Bill and Hillary Clinton; and he has broken with the anti-war movement because of what he says is its solipsism and anti-Americanism. In these things he is merely following the lead of his mentor Orwell, who angered many on the left with "Animal Farm" and "1984." But these books have been proved correct over the years as any books could be. I'm betting time will be kind to Hitchens, too.

Hitch Gushins...
By A Customer
It's nice to see the Hitch, old attack dog that he is, back off on the usual invective and give himself over to a 210 page fit of uncontrollable gushing. He's persuasive, too. It's hard not to come away from reading the book with a newfound respect for Orwell, for his "power of facing", and his fireproof integrity.
I can't help but feel that Hitchen's warning not to think of Orwell as a saint is just a fig leaf. Obviously, it's a cannonization essay, it's just that Hitch is too embarrassed to admit he's written such a thing. But why shouldn't we cannonize Orwell? Why shouldn't we take our hats off in awe at the man who saw each of the historical forces that would shape the next 50 years with such amazing clarity, all without ever abandoning an ethical code that would only be vindicated by everything that followed? Orwell's insights remain fresh, the power of his ethical vision remains urgently relevant, and as a role model on personal integrity, an inspiration for those who want to "walk the walk", we could scarcely do better.

Why Hitchens Writes
By Fred Wemyss (Actual Name)
Having been encouraged from about the age of twelve to read the essays of George Orwell I read Christopher Hitchens' recent meditation on him with a sense of gratitude. I haven't read any other work on Orwell which so perfectly conveys his inexhaustibility.
Hitchens' real achievement here is a mastery of Orwell's tone. Orwell's essays keep a reader up until dawn and WHY ORWELL MATTERS did the same to this reader.
I can't say I agree with everything in the book, and have to say that sometimes I didn't grasp Hitchens' arguments. But, the book is brief, and we know what Shakespeare said about brevity. The chief pleasure of this book is its style; learned from one of the greatest defenders of expressed thought.
