Medical Medium: Secrets Behind Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal, by Anthony William

Anthony William, Medical Medium, has helped tens of thousands of people heal from ailments that have been misdiagnosed or ineffectively treated or that doctors can’t resolve. He’s done this by listening to a divine voice that literally speaks into his ear, telling him what lies at the root of people’s pain or illness, and what they need to do to restore their health. His methods achieve spectacular results, even for those who have spent years and many thousands of dollars on all forms of medicine before turning to him. Now, in this revolutionary book, he opens the door to all he has learned over his 25 years of bringing people’s lives back: a massive amount of healing information, much of which science won’t discover for decades and most of which has never appeared anywhere before.

Medical Medium reveals the root causes of diseases and conditions that medical communities either misunderstand or struggle to understand at all. It explores all-natural solutions for dozens of the illnesses that plague us, including Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, chronic fatigue syndrome, hormonal imbalances, Hashimoto’s disease, multiple sclerosis, depression, neurological conditions, chronic inflammation, autoimmune disease, blood-sugar imbalances, colitis and other digestive disorders, and more. It also offers solutions for restoring the soul and spirit after illness has torn at our emotional fabric. Whether you’ve been given a diagnosis you don’t understand, or you have symptoms you don’t know how to name, or someone you love is sick, or you want to care for your own patients better, Medical Medium offers the answers you need. It’s also a guidebook for everyone seeking the secrets to living longer, healthier lives.

“The truth about the world, ourselves, life, purpose—it all comes down to healing,” Anthony William writes. “And the truth about healing is now in your hands.”

A controversial book… that could save your life!
By Eileen Crispell
I recently heard Rupert Sheldrake (the English biologist, researcher, author and public speaker) say that "the ability to heal is inherent to all forms of life", but I personally learned this from Anthony William. After years of not being well and having good doctors tell me they didn’t know why, I found Anthony William. What he, and the Spirit he hears, taught me has given me back my life and a future without pain and exhaustion. If you are considering purchasing this book and are reading the reviews (both good and bad) you will quickly see that this book stirs up all kinds of highly emotional responses. When a book does that, then you know there must be something big going on in those pages.

When you read this book, it is important to understand that there is an overall concept here that many illnesses and symptoms, that so many suffer from, are a "mystery" to current medical practices. This book does not fall into the category of following current medical practices or even current “alternative” practices. This book was not written to take “a side”. This book is something completely different and therefore provides an opportunity to take a new look at old problems.

The information in this book and how this information is brought forward can trigger lots of strong feelings and emotions. Many people have had years of being sick without anyone who can diagnose them properly or help them get better. For someone who does a quick read through, with the bias of what most people believe to be true, the information in this book can appear deceivingly simple and perhaps even nothing new. It can also seem highly outrageous to some. It can trigger all sorts of responses because it is not the same old information and it does not come from a typical source. However, if you take the opportunity to read this book with "beginner’s mind" (as one of my best teachers likes to say), you may find that this book has some considerable things to teach. The overall concept that many modern illnesses, especially in the autoimmune category, have been misunderstood, misdiagnosed and mistreated and that there are better alternatives, could be life changing for millions. We all come to the table with bias of some kind. And this is why I so appreciated the teacher who taught me to have "beginners mind” when first learning or hearing something new. It takes time and effort to let go of what you think you know, to hear something new. Especially when you have been thru so much already. You have to get over the fact that you may have been told something incorrect by someone you trust. It is not that they lied, it is simply that they did not know what they did not know. Anthony William does not speak or write about the medical or alternative community with any disdain or accusations. He is just suggesting we all look at things in a new way, so that we can bring relief to those who need it. There is plenty of time and opportunity for judgment in this world, but unless we are really willing to open to new concepts and ideas, then we are not really open to finding a true solution. For some, accepting that there is at least some truth in this book, then they must also accept that the source is legitimate and that what they have always thought to be true, is in fact not true. This can be hard to do, and yet, the way this book is suggesting to heal is so brilliant and kind and gentle, that it should actually be the first step that we all take with our bodies. And that is to be kind and gentle with our bodies, trust our bodies and feed our bodies what they were built to live and thrive on, so our bodies can head towards their inherent ability to heal. Don’t just skim this book, really read it and take it in. Grasp what this book is "really" saying. It took me awhile to get it when working with Anthony because it really is a different way to think about healing and what is actually going on in our bodies than we have been told. We are all too used to taking a “magic pill” and feeling better in three days, not understanding that this "fix" did not really fix the real problem, and is even perhaps leading us away from what we really need to be doing.
A practitioner that I went to many years ago told me a story that helped me in my own healing and being able to grasp how important the information in this book is. He said that when a tree gets a fungus on it and that fungus is slowly killing the tree, what we often think is the right thing to do is to spay a chemical on the tree to kill the fungus. But the problem with that is that we did not actually address the issue that caused the fungus to grow on the tree so the fungus will keep growing back and the chemicals will keep having to be sprayed and eventually the spray will seep into the roots of the tree and kill the tree. If we someone had looked more carefully they would see that the tree was not getting sufficient sunlight and air where the fungus was growing. If the area is cleared around it and proper air and light are able to penetrate to the tree the fungus will not be able to grow and the tree will be fine. It is this that Anthony and Spirit are writing about in this book. They have a different view on the base cause of illness and how to clear away what is causing the issue and allow the body to heal.

Since it is a common question in many reviews, I want to clarify that I purchased the book, that I have actually read the book, and I was not offered anything to write this review. I did not receive the promotional email that some people are talking about in these reviews. I am writing this review because I have experienced firsthand a total transformation from debilitating chronic illness and getting my life back, through the help of Anthony and the Spirit that speaks to him. Interestingly, I was seeing a very well established integrative physician in NYC when I first spoke with Anthony and Spirit about 3 years ago. It took about 3 minutes and Anthony and Spirit had listed all that was going on with me and all the symptoms I was experiencing. I went to my physician and told him of my phone call and what Anthony and Spirit had told me and my physician said "you are the 4th patient of mine to talk to this guy and he has been spot on every time." I reviewed the protocol that had been recommended to me with my physician and he said, "That is a very good protocol; do it!" Anthony and Spirit taught me how to take ownership and control over the healing process. They taught me that my body was always heading towards health and balance and that if I supported it properly, I would give it what it needed to heal itself. I was lucky to have such a great physician, and I took some other important advice that he and Anthony gave me: 1. Healing takes time and 2. Any true and full healing also needs to address the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of oneself. Without that, it is not a complete process.

Over the next couple of years Anthony and Spirit became an invaluable resource to my family. When one of my children wound up in the hospital having an anaphylactic reaction to something they ate and all the tests that the doctors ran showed that my child had NO allergies, within seconds on the phone, Anthony and Spirit were able to identify the allergy. When one of my children was extremely sick, Spirit knew exactly what was wrong. Anthony got on the phone (in the middle of the night) with my pediatrician and together they worked out a plan to help her. My child had the flu and strep throat at the same time. The child was under the age of 5 and because both the doctor and Anthony knew that giving antibiotics to a child that young, when they have the flu, could potentially be damaging, they came up with a protocol to help my child through the healing process and keep her safe from harm of any side effects of the two illnesses or potential damaging medications. So yes, I do have a bias, but the bias is that I have experienced firsthand the healing methods laid out in this book and the kind and compassionate nature of Anthony William. I am eternally grateful and humbled to have been able to able to work with Anthony and Spirit when I did. It is hard now, not being able to call on them as I once did, but I know how impossible it is for one man to serve all those in need and how important it is to get this information out to those in deep need.

And for those complaining about Anthony William's fees in these reviews. I don’t know exactly how many people are on the waiting list to speak with him, but last I heard, when calling to speak with him, the list was over ten thousand people. This al from word of mouth because he helped so many people. Hence, the need to start writing books, and the need to have a staff of people working for him. It is a huge misconception that "healers" should not charge or not charge much. First, Anthony does not call himself a “healer” and second, he charges what he needs to support himself and all the people that are required to help him help others. I have personally started and owned more than one business. I can tell you that very little of the fee that he collects actually goes to him. Money is an exchange of energy and a reflection of priorities. So many have spent so much more than this on medicals bills. People pay what he charges (and more) to go to concerts and sports events. This book is less than $30 and has the potential to give you your life back. Anthony William is just one man and there are millions, if not more, who have the potential to be helped by the information in this book. Find a health practitioner that you like and trust and share this information with them. See where it takes you. If you read it with that “beginners mind” I talked about and it is not for you, then pass it on. It will find its way into the hands and health of someone who really needs it. And for those of you who claim that the recommended protocol is dangerous. May I remind you that I did this sort of protocol with the blessings of my very well-known and respected NYC based integrative physician, and it worked for me.

There have been a lot of personal attacks of the author, the reviewers and the people commenting on the reviews. This is an inappropriate place for attacking and defaming others. People are here to learn, grow and heal.

Beating Lyme, CFS, Cognitive Dysfunction, SIBO...
By Tracy Konoske
I think it was "the perfect storm" but in 2015 we re did our hardwood floors in our home. I left during the day but did sleep here. Hindsight. We also ranch and feed hay all winter. It's not covered so it can get moldy and we inhale mold spores inadvertently. Plus just regular life and work stress but nothing crazy. I got sick with what could be labeled Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - and a whole lot of other things eventually - just weeks after the floor and after a winter of feeding moldy hay.

I am an (IFM) functionally trained nutritionist and have a super smart functional medicine MD too. Between the two of us, we chased what seemed to be SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), the fatigue, brain fog/cognitive dysfunction (and even did brain imaging at Amen Clinic in Bellevue WA), neurological symptoms, etc. In all of this, she thought it best to test for Lyme. My W Blot was negative. But b/c of my sx, she thought we should do a specialty lab. It was positive. I spent a few months thinking I had Lyme which is huge. I know enough to know there are no good answers. We bought a full spectrum infrared sauna since Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt highly rec's them for his Lyme patients. Just after the sauna purchase, I saw the free MM chapter on Facebook and followed the link. Thank God I did.

I was intrigued by the notion that Lyme was really viral and it made sense to me that THAT is why 1) antibiotics fail and in fact can make it worse and (yes, i experienced this) and 2) the sauna would work b/c it raises core body temperature which is then anti-viral. Klinghardt might be having so much success for reasons he doesnt yet understand.

I bought the book and being trained in supplements, dived right into the rec'd therapies. Honest to God, in 7 weeks I went from truly sick to feeling recovered from Lyme. Each week got better and better and my husband even thought that at week 5 that I was fixed. I wasn't ready to give up my sick label yet b/c that would mean I had to go back to regular life. But at week 7, I came to him and said, yes, i thought i was fully better and even mentioned going snow skiing.

At this point, i can see that it ebbs and flows. I'd say an average of 6 of 7 days are typically good but I have no stamina back yet. We just traveled this weekend and if I dont get enough sleep, I regress. My throat gets tired and I just need sleep. But I do not think I'm sick. I just think I need to finish healing. I'm now on day 3 of the cleanse, working on my adrenals, liver, and blood sugar (yup, forgot to mention that but my paleo diet landed me with pre-diabetes).

I feel like my sickness was a gift from God in a round about way. If I didnt get dx with Lyme, I wouldnt have paid any attention to the free chapter. AW has really changed my paradigm as what he knows is often radically different than my ahead-of-the-curve functional medicine training. Not only has this helped me, I will be able to do a much better job helping my own patients.

FOREVER IN GRATITUDE!!! I can't believe all the negative reviews!
By Starr L.
This book can change your life. I honestly believe you can begin your healing by following Anthony’s wisdom outlined here. He helped me personally. I know many others he helped who have healed from ailments that have plagued them for years. I also know others who are starting to feel better just from implementing what he teaches in this book. I have given copies to quite a few of my loved-ones, friends, and colleagues. I would personally recommend this book to all people – even if they are well and content – because I believe they will find something of worth that will only add to their life and their path of well-being.

I am proud to say that I had the experience of being one of Anthony’s many clients. I will never forget the first time we talked. He did not know a single thing about me except my name, and I told him nothing – yet he began to list every symptom I was experiencing. He even knew I had a slight heart murmur! What a relief to be validated, to finally be told what was causing my agony, and what exactly I needed to do in order to regain my health and my confidence. And I DID! If you are drawn to his work, please read the book and sign up for a consultation.

I am appalled and saddened by the number of people on here that seem to be making it their mission to attack Anthony’s character and integrity without even knowing him, discredit the publisher, and to discourage people from buying a book that could save their lives. Out of genuine curiosity and a desire to learn what was bothering people, I read through a lot of the critical reviews and I am finding that there is so much that is entirely off base. It is one thing to give a book review, but it is quite another to call into question who the author is as a person and how he runs his practice. People are complaining about his rates. He works with many people every day and in order to serve on such a large scale (hundreds of people a month) he needs a dedicated and hard-working staff to support him. I would imagine the overhead is extensive. People spend a lot of money on a lot of stuff - Christmas gifts, passions and pursuits, their daily Starbucks fix, If a person resonates with the value of service Anthony provides and makes getting the reading a priority, the money will show up. It's just the same with time - when people say they have no time to do xyz - those are just excuses for being unable to prioritize their tasks. It's the same with prioritizing money - people will create the money for the things they really desire to have in their lives. He offers a lot for free to make his information accessible to many (like many healers and entrepreneurs, who offer free services and then paid services). Maybe people do not know he does a weekly radio show where he shares his knowledge freely, and where he takes calls and helps people at no charge. Maybe people do not know that he posts information daily on a Facebook page. Maybe people do not know that he has a Facebook Members page where he answers numerous specific health questions each month. And, still, maybe people just do not know, let alone understand, the extent of energy, time, sacrifice, and compassion it takes from someone to heed their calling in trying to help this world heal and get the truth out there. I commend him on working so hard on behalf of us all. Anthony is an incredible man and offers a great service to humanity.

The other complaint people have is that the 5 star reviews are unauthentic. To doubt the integrity of those who have given 5 star reviews is very judgmental. Anthony has assisted thousands of people who have had their lives completely changed for the better, and are more than happy to legitimately and rightfully give the book a 5 star review. There are so many people who are impressed by his book alone and have genuinely and sincerely given the book a 5 star review. Just knowing who he is can, in and of itself, elicit five stars from so many!

It is a travesty that the negative reviews are telling people to not purchase a book that could save them from chronic illness and pain and move them onto a path of healing. If the book doesn't resonate with you, why would you stop someone from having their own experience with it and let them decide for themselves whether they are drawn to the healing protocols, the meditations, and the angel healing work?

Despite what some of the reviews are saying, there certainly ARE details in this book that you won’t find anywhere else! Not from a doctor, naturopath, psychic, and certainly not from the Internet. Do you know, for example, that there are 60 varieties of the Epstein-Barr Virus (and that it is the biggest epidemic on the planet right now, in its original and mutated form), that there 30 strains of Shingles, or that there is a group of Unknown Angels?

Because so many ill and suffering people are already lacking trust in their life and in the goodness of others, they see the negativity on here and they turn away (or they write negative reviews). I want to help stop that. If you are wanting to connect with a medium who will share new information, who hears his information from the word Compassion (Spirit), and who says he has no medical background then you know you have to go somewhat on faith if you are to take on any of the information he shares! You have to trust your intuition. If you are not drawn to it, that is okay! Not everything resonates for everyone. I just do not get people's compulsion to stop others from having their own experience with this book, especially if it is offering the chance to turn around and save their life.

If you are debating whether to purchase this book or not, know that it could be the answer to your prayers. Ignore the naysayers, the haters, the misinformed, the judging, the wolves in sheep clothing, and take a leap – buy the book! (If it doesn't resonate with you, you can always return it to Amazon, sell it, or give it away to someone.)

Aren't you a tiny bit curious what all the fuss is about?

What if all the people saying "no" never found their answers because they were not ready to hear them? What if you ARE ready to hear it? You were guided to Anthony William and to this page for a reason. You are reading my words for a reason. I work with people who are sick and suffering every day and I know the power of healing and the empowerment that healing can bring, along with the hope that this book provides. The world needs Anthony William, his incredible mediumship gift, and the truth that he shares that has helped healed thousands already. You (like me and so many I know) could be one of them.

Thank you for all you are and for all you do, Anthony William.

Sloppy on basic theory
By Scott Willing
This book is required reading for electrical apprentices in Canada. It has lots of practical information and illustrations that are good for the most part. However, I can't let the author off the hook for his incredibly sloppy treatment (poor understanding?) of basic theory. I blame this author for the fact that many electrical instructors are equally foggy on rudimentary theory and sloppy in their use of terminology, and pass their confusion on to generation after generation of students.

A small example: the book states that the joule is the SI equivalent of the watt -- completely, inexcuseably fictional -- and then on the very next page it states a legitimate definition of a joule as being one watt-second. What newbie student needs this? The confusion between energy and power (the rate of energy conversion or work being done) rears its head elsewhere, e.g. in questions like "How many watts of heat are produced when... blah blah blah."

The book's descriptions of atomic structure might've passed muster some decades ago, but they're sorely in need of a refresh.

No appreciation is shown for the proper use of significant figures in calculations. The results of many of the calculations (unless they happen to produce a nice integer result) are stated arbitrarily to three decimal places, e.g. 120*0.0667 = 8.004. This precision isn't justified, and the irony is that a properly-rounded result would actually be more accurate. To compound the problem, solutions frequently involve the calculation of unneeded intermediate results, incurring cumulative errors. Why not fully solve the algebraic expressions for the desired unknowns before plugging in numbers?

I know lots of folks would think me too critical of "details" that aren't really going to affect the careers of the future electricians who are forced to buy this thing. My response is that there is no upside to, or excuse for teaching theory badly. It only causes unnecessary confusion. With respect to my complaint about significant figures, the author misses an opportunity to teach valuable lessons to people who will be making measurements in the field (using instruments with finite accuracy) about being reasonable in the conclusions they draw from those measurements.

The really sad thing is that this could be an excellent text if the author or publisher would let one knowledgeable physics major or electrical engineer go through the book and clean it up. But as long as they have a captive audience, why bother?

Amazon.com Review
What is most notable about this funny, touching, memorable first novel from Stephen Chbosky is the resounding accuracy with which the author captures the voice of a boy teetering on the brink of adulthood. Charlie is a freshman. And while's he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. He's a wallflower--shy and introspective, and intelligent beyond his years, if not very savvy in the social arts. We learn about Charlie through the letters he writes to someone of undisclosed name, age, and gender, a stylistic technique that adds to the heart-wrenching earnestness saturating this teen's story. Charlie encounters the same struggles that many kids face in high school--how to make friends, the intensity of a crush, family tensions, a first relationship, exploring sexuality, experimenting with drugs--but he must also deal with his best friend's recent suicide. Charlie's letters take on the intimate feel of a journal as he shares his day-to-day thoughts and feelings:

I walk around the school hallways and look at the people. I look at the teachers and wonder why they're here. If they like their jobs. Or us. And I wonder how smart they were when they were fifteen. Not in a mean way. In a curious way. It's like looking at all the students and wondering who's had their heart broken that day, and how they are able to cope with having three quizzes and a book report due on top of that. Or wondering who did the heart breaking. And wondering why. With the help of a teacher who recognizes his wisdom and intuition, and his two friends, seniors Samantha and Patrick, Charlie mostly manages to avoid the depression he feels creeping up like kudzu. When it all becomes too much, after a shocking realization about his beloved late Aunt Helen, Charlie retreats from reality for awhile. But he makes it back in due time, ready to face his sophomore year and all that it may bring. Charlie, sincerely searching for that feeling of "being infinite," is a kindred spirit to the generation that's been slapped with the label X. --Brangien Davis

From Publishers Weekly
A trite coming-of-age novel that could easily appeal to a YA readership, filmmaker Chbosky's debut broadcasts its intentions with the publisher's announcement that ads will run on MTV. Charlie, the wallflower of the title, goes through a veritable bath of bathos in his 10th grade year, 1991. The novel is formatted as a series of letters to an unnamed "friend," the first of which reveals the suicide of Charlie's pal Michael. Charlie's response--valid enough--is to cry. The crying soon gets out of hand, though--in subsequent letters, his father, his aunt, his sister and his sister's boyfriend all become lachrymose. Charlie has the usual dire adolescent problems--sex, drugs, the thuggish football team--and they perplex him in the usual teen TV ways. [...] Into these standard teenage issues Chbosky infuses a droning insistence on Charlie's supersensitive disposition. Charlie's English teacher and others have a disconcerting tendency to rhapsodize over Charlie's giftedness, which seems to consist of Charlie's unquestioning assimilation of the teacher's taste in books. In the end we learn the root of Charlie's psychological problems, and we confront, with him, the coming rigors of 11th grade, ever hopeful that he'll find a suitable girlfriend and increase his vocabulary.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 UpAn epistolary narrative cleverly places readers in the role of recipients of Charlies unfolding story of his freshman year in high school. From the beginning, Charlies identity as an outsider is credibly established. It was in the spring of the previous school year that his best friend committed suicide and now that his class has gone through a summer of change, the boy finds that he has drifted away from old friends. He finds a new and satisfying social set, however, made up of several high school seniors, bright bohemians with ego-bruising insights and, really, hearts of gold. These new friends make more sense to Charlie than his star football-playing older brother ever did and they are able to teach him about the realities of life that his older sister doesnt have the time to share with him. Grounded in a specific time (the 1991/92 academic year) and place (western Pennsylvania), Charlie, his friends, and family are palpably real. His grandfather is an embarrassing bigot; his new best friend is gay; his sister must resolve her pregnancy without her boyfriends support. Charlie develops from an observant wallflower into his own man of action, and, with the help of a therapist, he begins to face the sexual abuse he had experienced as a child. This report on his life will engage teen readers for years to come.Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA

Perfect Modern Coming of Age Story
By taylor storey
Loved it. Like "the fault in our stars" I tore through this one in 2 days. This is a book that will take you through the american high school growing up experience. It doesn't attempt to avoid any part of it, which is why it is often found on banned book lists at schools. I think it is easy to see why (though the author is apparently surprised). There is drug use, there is sexual stuff, some violence. Having said that, I don't think it is a book that emphasizes any of it, but simply acknowledges: these things are a part of the culture.

I really appreciate that this book does not overhype any part of life. It is not trying to sell you anything and that is so refreshing.

The story is set up as a character named charlie writing letters to a more mature person he has never met, a person who "listens and understands and doesn't try to sleep with people just because you could have." Someone describes charlie as being a "wallflower" --a person who observes things and doesn't participate. He tries and begins to participate a bit more often. He finds a group of friends that is something like the 90's equivalent of the modern "hipster" crowd, who likes to listen to music, read books, is not inclined towards pop culture, experiments with some drugs and alcohol.

This book is full of observations on the american culture from a wallflower perspective- someone who is in it, but observing it as much as participating in it. In retrospect it is beautiful for taking a calm look at it, not worried, but seeing what is there.

This book would be most valuable to the adolescents who are going through, and about to go through the experiences described. They will know that there are many parts that are socially constructed and they should know it is all a phase and to feel confident in who they are, there is more to life than what you experience as an adolescent. Experience that time, don't miss it, but be yourself, even if there is no immediate popularity, you will be fine.

Some parents would feel nervous about some of the topics in the book. But to be honest, that is life. I'm reminded of a certain man from Galilee who was eventually killed saying "don't worry about your life" and a certain hobbit from the shire saying "it's dangerous business to walk out your front door" ... it is. There are great experiences and ones that hurt and are sad. That's life. This book is a snapshot of life. If I continue to work with this age group, I will often recommend it.

Great Book. Sucky Ending.
By Clio Reads
Back when this movie came out, I heard good things about it, but we had a baby and no free time, so never got around to seeing it. Then I heard it was based on a book, and I thought, well, at least I have time to read... but as I was reading blurbs and reviews of the book in preparation to buy, I kept seeing it compared to The Catcher in the Rye.

I hate The Catcher in the Rye. More than any other book I can think of, I loathe that book, I loathe Holden Caulfield, and it is at the very top of my list of Books-I-HATE-that-Everyone-Else-Loves (followed closely by The Great Gatsby). And of course the fact that everyone else loves Catcher in the Rye makes me loathe it even more. So, based on all those CitR comparisons, I took a pass on The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Yet I kept hearing good things about Perks, and eventually I broke down. The good news is, the comparisons to CitR are undeserved (though I get why people make them): Holden Caulfield is a spoiled, entitled, jaded, self-indulgent, self-centered, whiny little douchenozzle; Charlie is (blessedly) not. Charlie is observant, sensitive, generally considerate, and focused on others much more so than on himself (to his peril, as we learn). However, he's far from a perfect narrator: despite his prodigious intelligence, Charlie is painfully (sometimes unbelievably) naive and clueless in social situations. He's also mentally ill. His diagnoses are never made explicit, and I'm not a doctor, but I'd say he's suffering from depression and PTSD from several childhood traumas, including the suicide of one of his only friends, the death of a beloved aunt, and another, deeper trauma (so deep Charlie himself has shut out the memory) that is not revealed until the last pages of the book.

Despite Charlie's imperfections as a narrator, I connected deeply with his story. This book is set in 1991-1992, Charlie's first year of high school. That puts him one year behind me (and since he stayed back a year, we are the same age). Like Charlie, I too found my niche in high school among the semi-geeky, semi-awesome (depending on one's perspective) artsy crowd. Like Charlie, I too spent countless hours with my friends listening to Nirvana and the Smiths and watching Harold and Maude and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Like Charlie, my friends and I wrestled with issues like unrequited first love, teen dating violence, substance use, sexual orientation and identity, suicide, abortion, and childhood sexual abuse.

I've read several other reviews that criticize Perks for raising all of these issues in only a glancing way, without thoroughly dealing with any of them. I see what these reviewers are saying, but I think that critique is grossly unfair. Charlie's perspective is very similar to my recollection of my own high school experience. All of these huge, weighty, adult issues kept popping up unexpectedly, and you just had to figure out how to think about them, talk about them, what to do about them in the moment so that you could get back to the day-to-day business of finishing your homework, preparing for exams, going to this weekend's party -- but no, you never actually solved these problems. You didn't figure them out. You dealt with them as they came up, and then you spent years reflecting on those experiences, learning from them in the hope that you will deal better the next time you find yourself in the same boat.

Why only 3.5 stars, then, if I found Charlie so authentic? The ending. *So* disappointing. I don't want to spoil it for anyone (and the book is totally worth reading, even with the bummer ending), but I will say that Charlie has a very late-in-coming revelation of a major childhood trauma that sends him around the bend. He gets hospitalized for two months, and upon his release, suddenly he has a new shiny happy outlook on life that, frankly, he didn't earn, and I don't buy. I don't mind the relatively superficial treatment of all of the other weighty issues of the book, but Charlie is this book, he is the narrator, and if we can't trust him, we can't trust anything about the story. I'd have been happier with an ending that left him damaged but honest.

By Linda Osterhoudt
Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is a book with a lot of challenging material in it. Even though these aspects are challenging, these things such as drugs, sex, abuse, and determining sexuality all come into play and are very important in this book. These topics are all very real things that should be addressed. This book really speaks to teens and adults in a way that nothing else can, it is an amazing story about the realities of high school and the world in general. In fact this book was so real, it was unlike any of the sugar coated high school books, Chbosky proves this by including “But because things change. And people leave. And life doesn’t stop for anybody”(Chbosky145) in his book. Personally I loved this book, if I didn't have to put it down, I wouldn't have. It is the kind of book that sucks you in until you are finished and wishing it was longer.

Reynolds (Ish) creates a lighthearted yet insightful fable about the repercussions of overscheduled lives. The tale's opening line—"Leo was a busy lad"—appears opposite a picture of a blond boy diligently multitasking. No matter how hard he works, there is always more to do, so he decides to make a to-do list. Alas that list grows and grows, leading Leo to utter, "So few of me and so much to do. If only there were two of me." Immediately, there is a knock on the door, which Leo opens to find an identical replica of himself. The two find even more to do—as do the subsequent Leos—until there are 10 in all, "each one busier than the next." Though his conscientious clones announce there is no time to rest, exhausted Leo slips away to take a nap. Still savoring his naptime dream, Leo wonders, "What if I did less—but did my best?" Rendered in watercolor, ink and tea, Reynolds's art provides a deft balance of spare pages and comically cluttered compositions, and gives the various Leos an entertaining array of facial expressions. An engaging and eye-opening tale for over-programmed kids and the adults who set their schedules. All ages. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3–Leo is a busy lad–so busy, in fact, that he wishes for a second Leo to share his chores. Just like that, another Leo appears…and another…and another. But instead of reducing his workload, all the extra Leos only seem to increase it. With so much personnel to manage, things eventually become complicated enough to justify a sixth Leo, who enters the picture as a kind of consultant–and who advises the others to bring in a seventh. The situation deteriorates from there, until–with 10 Leos running themselves ragged–the original lad ultimately concludes that efficiency and productivity are sometimes overrated. Reynolds's ink, watercolor, and tea illustrations begin spare and simple and get progressively more frantic as the book's population explodes. The story ends with a much more serene Leo, alone again, savoring his peace, quiet, and refreshingly uncluttered schedule. Consider this a solid supplemental purchase for collections with the space–and, of course, the time!–to spare.–Catherine Threadgill, Charleston County Public Library, SC

Brain Gym Teacher's Edition details the 26 Brain Gym activities used around the world by people of all ages and abilities to make learning easier. This is the revised and enlarged third edition (2010). This is a stand-alone book for parents, teachers and learners who want in-depth descriptions and variations for the 26 Brain Gym activities. Those who need only drawings of the 26 and simple descriptions of how to do them can refer to the small orange book Brain Gym: Simple Activities for Whole-Brain Learning, written in a simple story form that children can understand.

The book references recent research in the field of neuroplasticity as it shows how learners can master the physical skills required for development of academic abilities. The 26 activities, each taking just a minute or so to do, help learners to develop skills of stability, locomotion, and sensorimotor coordination, as well as providing effective tools for self-calming and self-management. When a student can respond to the stress that inhibits the flow of learning, he or she can better access the joy, creativity, and expression inherent in the learning process. This expanded 2010 version of the book offers new information on the physical skills involved in the learning process, ways to use the 26 activities to teach specific academics such as reading and writing, personal accounts from parent and educators, and games for teaching through movement and play.

Very important book for educators
By jumpy1
This book is an excellent introduction and manual for Brain Gym. It not only explains in detail how to do the simple excercises, but gives many scientific explanations for how and why they work.

For those who don't know, Brain Gym is a method whereby brain functions are accessed by performing simple physical movements, and it has been found to profoundly improve ADD/ADHD/Dyslexic conditions as well as other learning disabilities. It is a series of exercises (drawn from all areas of movement -- from the calisthenics we did in phys-ed class to the eye exercises of behavioral optometrists, to acu-pressure points) specifically studied and narrowed down after many years of research to those that were found to optimally affect brain functions. Luckily they are all easy and take only minutes (or even seconds) to do, and they get immediate, verifiable results. In my experience they help students and professionals of all ages learn faster, improve memory and coordination, and generally reduce the stress of adjusting to new situations or learning foreign or difficult tasks.
In my own experience, I no longer teach violin without integrating Brain Gym exercises because the students learn so much faster and develop better technique because they are more relaxed, naturally. I have also taught Brain Gym to writers, musicians, actors, doctors, mathematicians, teachers, dancers, investment bankers, producers etc. and the feedback is consistently positive. If you are a teacher and are interested in this kind of thing, classes are recommended, but the next best thing is to have this little book!

The Guineveres: A Novel, by Sarah Domet

“A first novel whose tone echoes that of Jeffrey Eugenides’s The Virgin Suicides…This phenomenal, character-driven story is mesmerizing.” --Library Journal (starred review)

To four girls who have nothing, their friendship is everything: they are each other’s confidants, teachers, and family. The girls are all named Guinevere―Vere, Gwen, Ginny, and Win―and it is the surprise of finding another Guinevere in their midst that first brings them together. They come to The Sisters of the Supreme Adoration convent by different paths, delivered by their families, each with her own complicated, heartbreaking story that she safeguards. Gwen is all Hollywood glamour and swagger; Ginny is a budding artiste with a sentiment to match; Win’s tough bravado isn’t even skin deep; and Vere is the only one who seems to be a believer, trying to hold onto her faith that her mother will one day return for her. However, the girls are more than the sum of their parts and together they form the all powerful and confident The Guineveres, bound by the extraordinary coincidence of their names and girded against the indignities of their plain, sequestered lives.

The nuns who raise them teach the Guineveres that faith is about waiting: waiting for the mail, for weekly wash day, for a miracle, or for the day they turn eighteen and are allowed to leave the convent. But the Guineveres grow tired of waiting. And so when four comatose soldiers from the War looming outside arrive at the convent, the girls realize that these men may hold their ticket out.

In prose shot through with beauty, Sarah Domet weaves together the Guineveres’ past, present, and future, as well as the stories of the female saints they were raised on, to capture the wonder and tumult of girlhood and the magical thinking of young women as they cross over to adulthood.

Review

“Deft and lovely…The perfect weight, in all ways. It’s suitable for a vacation, and you can describe it in one inviting line, but then it keeps unfolding and deepening, taking unexpected turns.”
―The New York Times Book Review

“If you’ve been seeking a divine (in every sense) debut novel, you'll savor Sarah Domet's The Guineveres…From heavenly start to earthbound finish, this book is resounding and revelatory on questions of family, faith, and friendship.”
―Elle

“Thoughtful and dazzling.”
―Harper’s Bazaar

“Wonderful…At times sacred, occasionally profane, The Guineveres is a heavenly read from an author worth watching.”
―BookPage

“The Guineveres is a wondrous look at the aches and pains of growing up…These girls’ story gives us something to believe in.”
―Fort Worth Star-Telegram

“Compassionate…A coming-of-age story about young girls exploring their world and their bodies and, generally speaking, the meaning of life…A powerful story, one that will not be easily forgotten.”
―BookBrowse

“Very Virgin Suicides.”
―New York Daily News (7 Books to Read in October)

“A wacky, diverting tale.”
―People Magazine (The Best New Books)

“Domet has constructed a complete picture of the survival and revival journeys of four women, who readers will begin to feel as though they know in real life. You will hurt for each of these girls, mourn with them, grow angry at them, relate to their desires and longings, and question their choices―but like The Guineveres themselves, you won’t be able to help but to love them intensely.”
―Bustle

“Insightful…Dreamy, elegantly structured…The glimpse of a year in the life of four passionately confused adolescents serves as a striking debut.”
―Columbus Dispatch

“Beautifully detailed…A moving and sweetly engaging tale. It is sad and funny, exquisitely written with a powerful depth of characterization. It truly is a gem, a worthy read.”
―The Maine Edge

“A beautiful debut literary novel by an author to watch.”
―PopSugar

“Excellent…Domet’s debut will lure readers in with well-developed characters, rich language, and small miracles.”
―School Library Journal

“A first novel whose tone echoes that of Jeffrey Eugenides’s The Virgin Suicides…This phenomenal, character-driven story is mesmerizing.”
―Library Journal (starred review)

“Domet’s debut is a luminous bildungsroman, brimming with wisdom about how girls view themselves, each other, and the world around them.”
―Booklist (starred review)

"Domet deftly weaves in the girls’ individual stories and the stories of female saints into her structure, making this a satisfying read on multiple levels.”
―Publishers Weekly

“Domet’s lively writing is as original as her plot, which knits the Guineveres’ struggles together with stories of female saints. Poignant and often funny, Domet captures the fever of teenage desire by pinning it against the confines of a strict religious environment.”
―Atlanta Magazine

“Sarah Domet has brought forth some kind of wonderful miracle with The Guineveres. All four Guineveres seek to survive their experiences at The Sisters of the Supreme Adoration, and their lives, so difficult and yet so thrilling to witness thanks to Domet’s assured writing, begin to approximate the divine experiences of the saints whom they study. And, best of all, Domet knows just when to look away from the divine and focus instead on matters altogether more earthbound and sinful. This is an amazing book, a unique writer.”
―Kevin Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of The Family Fang

“The Guineveres is a glorious debut. Sarah Domet is an enthralling storyteller who has an original voice and an ability to create unforgettable characters with a deep and abiding understanding of the human heart. Love, betrayal, forgiveness, it’s all here. Readers will savor and rejoice.”
―Adriana Trigiani, author of The Shoemaker’s Wife

“Sarah Domet’s The Guineveres is a revelation, the way Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Virgin Suicides was a revelation: rarely do we see a writer so young, so brilliant, who wears her brilliance so offhandedly, so charmingly, so winningly. Rarely do we see such a young writer so masterful in her control of language, of form. We saw it in Eugenides’ first book, and now we see it in Sarah Domet’s The Guineveres. This is a writer, a book, to cherish.”
―Brock Clarke, author of An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England

Beautiful and engrossing story
By Kelly F
I loved this book and was swept up in it from the get go. The story is lovely and engrossing. The girls are fully formed. The interwoven stories of saints was an interesting and fascinating aspect. I'm usually turned off when a book changes POV characters (I often find it takes me out of the story too much) but the way Ms Domet executed the brief forays into the "other" Guineveres backstories was beautifully done. This is also one of the best depictions of adolescent female friendship I have ever read - I found myself deeply invested in all 4 Guineveres and was sad to see the last page. I look forward to reading more from Ms Domet. Highly recommend!

Do not miss this rich tapestry of a book!
By RUHU
This book is an act of creation with a capital C. Domet weaves together brilliantly her own, female version of the trinity. This one with four girls who have been abandoned by parents who are unable to give their daughters the upbringing they deserve, and for whom the girls never cease waiting, writing letters and praying in the hope of being taken home. The 4 Guineveres, each with her own nickname and very different personality, find in their connection with each other a sense of belonging and unity.

The four engage in a multitude of sometimes humorous, always poignant escapades in an effort to find a physical and ultimately a mental way to transcend the grim life at the convent - a kind of anti-Hogwarts - where the nuns and priests can seem as stifled and starved for affection as their charges.

The Guineveres' eye-opening experiences with the nuns and priests who care for them, especially the alcohol-challenged Father James and the religiously "constipated" Sister Fran, inadvertently teach them the very lessons they were supposed to be sheltered from. These and their shifting relationships with the other girls around them provide a clear-eyed view into what it is like to become a woman in a world that both glorifies and excoriates the female - ironically timely given the current social climate.

The narrator, the adult Vere, who retells the Guineveres' story with the wisdom and tolerance born of time and reflection, gives the tale an additional perspective, untainted by anger or judgement, while building dramatic tension and interest. No heavy handed voice here. Domet uses Vere sparingly and in just the right doses to enhance the novel and move it forward.

The Guineveres is, in its own way, both a literal and figurative hagiography, based not in traditional religion, but in the search of those starved for love, battling loneliness and abandonment, trying to find and make meaning where none appears to exist, making saints of us all.
The novel is also irresistible in the elegance of its construction. A literary masterpiece that should be read and reread to discover new layers of meaning.
This is a book to be savored for its depth, its deft and original use of language, and a power and inventiveness that make it irresistible. Don't expect a guilty and fleeting pleasure. This one will stay with you and change the way you see the world.
