Sandra Volgy Everett, PhD, is Director of Clinical Education at the Arizona Institute of Family Therapy and is in private practice in Tucson, Arizona. An excellent resource! I'm a therapist working with children, couples, and families where ADHD is sometimes an issue at various levels. This book covers all of the bases, noting issues in the parent-child subsystem, the marital subsystem, the sibling subsystem, and the whole system in general. Good, practical wisdom!

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!

One of the gals at the health food store that I go to recommended this book. If I had to pick only one book on herbal teas, this would be the one. It is a quick, easy reference - and right on the money with the medicinal uses and any cautions that should be taken. I built my 'herbal tea cabinet' based on the advice from this book - and I need a bigger cabinet! (smile)

The cost is just pennies for the 20,000 secrets!

Excellent easy reference and guide but potentially misleading and even dangerous

I ordered this book last week and have LOVED reading it. Ms. Zak has done a wonderful job of writing informatively and interestingly. Her paragraphs overflow with information and anecdotes and it just makes me excited to read about all the ailments that herbs, used correctly, can address.

That said, I started to have a few small items come up as I was reading that I thought, "That could have been done better." Chapter 5 is all about an A-Z guide of ailments with the herbs listed beneath them to address that particular malady. On further research of the individual herbs, however, we find that some herbs only marginally affect that illness while others are not recommended and others yet might be the *perfect* herb for that illness. I have found myself going back and forth between the list and the sections detailing each herb and either crossing out certain herbs the author recommends against (blue cohosh, for instance) or highlighting the herb that is "the supreme" herb for that problem. For ease of reference, I wish the author or editor had done that for me-- using a ranking system of some sort to mark the extremes (those herbs either absolutely excellent for a certain condition or those that, while they address it, are not recommended for it). Flipping back and forth in the book is a bit of a pain, no matter how much I've enjoyed learning more about the herbs.

That was only a personal preference, however, and nothing that would keep me from recommending the book. It's inconvenient, but doesn't reflect on the content of the book, merely the manageability.

Stepping up the inconvenience, I found I had to repeatedly look outside of this book to reference something the book said. In Ms. Zak's A-Z list of ailments, she sometimes has an ailment that does not have its own list of herbs beneath it but instead has a note saying, "See ________ [instead]." That is fine and understandable each time it is used. (For instance, under "Glands," it says, "See Lymph System," or under "Blemishes" she sends you to "See Acne" instead.) What surprised and confused me was when she lists "Balding" and has herbs listed under it and then several pages later lists "Hair Loss," under which the exact three herbs are again listed. I had to go outside of the book to figure out if this was merely redundant, if it was poorly worded, or if there was a valid difference between the two conditions. It looks like there IS a difference (hair loss can be any hair from your body while balding medically refers to loss of hair on your head), but it was just unclear in the book.

Where I truly have trouble with this book is in the information itself. A mild example of misinformation is on page 143 when Ms. Zak addresses green tea. At the very bottom of the page, she inserts the quick comment, "Jasmine tea is a green tea with jasmine blossoms." All my life I have enjoyed jasmine tea-- jasmine tea made from green leaves scented by jasmine oil or flowers, or tea made straight from brewing jasmine flowers alone. You can buy it either way, and while most people drink it scented rather than made by the flowers themselves, I thought it interesting that Ms. Zak noted only one way of drinking jasmine tea. Furthermore, her acknowledgement of jasmine tea but omission of addressing the flower as its own herb makes it appear that jasmine has no healing properties of its own. On the contrary, it has several, including but not limited to soothing aromatherapy, protecting red blood cells from free radicals, and weight management.

A more serious and harmful example of Ms. Zak's failure to include information is the herb sage. The section on sage takes up space from page 196 to 197. It includes a brief history of the herb and then recounts sage's healing properties: anti-aging, blood sugar, digestive remedy, liver stimulant, nasal congestion, night sweats, respiratory infections, good for women's health, etc. It even includes the special feature "anti-dandruff hair rinse." The caution states, "Moderate use is best. Avoid sage if you have epilepsy." It sounds like a GREAT herb for me to take occasionally. I don't have epilepsy and now I know not to use it a lot, but infrequently.

What the section on sage doesn't tell you is that sage is the herb most frequently used to help a women stop lactating. If a woman miscarries her child or has decided not to nurse her baby for one reason or another, sage tea is recommended as it impairs milk supply and production. I would not have known this myself (as I hadn't yet cross-referenced any of these herbs with another book's list of herbs and their uses) had I not just lost our young son and am now in the position of needing to stop milk production. The very first recommendation I got was to drink sage tea. I came home and opened my new tea book, glad and a bit relieved that I had such a wonderful guide to something I enjoy so much-- drinking tea and healing naturally. I expected I would find more information to help round-out my new knowledge of this herb and its uses. Consequently, I was completely surprised to see that Ms. Zak failed to mention this property of sage. Can you imagine a young mother, exclusively breast-feeding her infant, struggling with her period returning? She looks up a remedy in this book, sees that sage lists a caution but doesn't say anything about pregnant or nursing mothers, and reads that sage "is a tonic to the reproductive system that eases menstrual irregularities." Not seeing any caution relating to her own health, she decides to take two cups of tea for several days. Imagine her surprise and dismay when her milk supply dries up and she suddenly has a hungry baby and no milk to feed him with!

As shocked as I was when I realized the author failed to include this vital piece of information, I rationalized that it was a one-time thing and any responsible reader will cross-reference all of the herbs before using them. On a whim, I decided to look up the other herbs I was recommended to use to stop lactation: peppermint, spearmint, and lemon balm among them. To my disappointment, Ms. Zak again fails to mention these crucial medical properties when she lists their pros and cons. Lemon balm doesn't even include a caution at all, when to my mind, "May dry up your milk supply" is a pretty big deal that can negatively affect an unsuspecting mother and child.

This makes me wonder what other crucial information is left out. I feel disillusioned and let down from my initial excitement about this book. If I have to read another book or two just to check out all the information in this book, is this one really worth it?

My hesitating answer at this point is "yes." Despite its failure to include all the cautions it should (definitively with these milk-halting herbs and possibly with others), it points the reader in the general direction they should look. It's an infectious read for a beginner in teas and it's a good quick guide. I will not take this book at its word in the future and will, without fail, look up each herb in at least one other book before I use it or recommend it to anyone else. It is disappointing, and I hope that other readers will look into each herb as well and go into this with their eyes open.

All of my issues (both minor and those with greater repercussions) can be fixed in a second edition, and I have high hopes for Ms. Zak's work. It is with mixed feelings that I give this book a three-star rating-- it was such a wonderful and informative read until I realized the serious health mistakes I could make by solely relying on this book with no other comprehensive guide. It is short, informative, interesting, and helpful, but not the comprehensive and reliable guide every family should have.

Precisely what it claims to be

This book is precisely what it claims to be: a collection of 4 IELTS tests with answers. There is no CD-ROM (so if you want to do the listening part you need to also purchase the CD).

In other words, there are no grammatical rules explained, no ramping-up activities, no tips for the actual test, and no strategies on how to optimize the performance in the 4 parts of the test. For all these reasons, this book is absolutely not enough for passing the actual exam.

Even if your grammar is stellar (and you need no book about it) and your listening skills are wonderful (and you need no CD-ROM), you will still need to learn the best strategies in that the IELTS exam format places *heavy* time constraints on you! I suggest "Action plan for IELTS" for finding some neat strategies.

Furthermore, I find the tips inside "Step up to IELTS" just great. A student needs to know (for example) that, as far as what the IELTS examiners are after, it is better to try to use a complex sentence and fail at it than write/speak in simple sentences.

Another great reference by perez!

Another excellent book by Perez! Combined with his first book i learned plenty of tips to create full fledged rpg's faster. What used to take months now l can get a core game done in a week.

For reference i also use rpg maker for teens (which covers vx) and my mechanics/numbers use the d20 system (because why reinvent the wheel?)

About the Author

R.C. Hibbeler graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana with a BS in Civil Engineering (major in Structures) and an MS in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.

 

Hibbeler’s professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural and stress analysis work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, as well as Sargent and Lundy in Chicago.  He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana.

 

Hibbeler currently teaches both civil and mechanical engineering courses at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. In the past he has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College.

Great Learning Tool

This textbook really helped me to learn structures. The book was easy to read and understand with pleanty of pictures along the way for visual representations of the concepts involved. Each step was clearly stated and explained. The example problems were very helpful and mostly easy to follow. Overall, a good engineering structures text.

This one's a keeper. I bought it for P.E. exam review, which it is very good for, but also good as an introduction to Structural Analysis. Up to date issue. Easy to read and understand, excellent example and practice problems. A nice book. The reviews I read on it were good compared to others. Glad I bought it.

Solutions Manual necessary

Like all his books, Hibbeler does a wonderful job organizing and laying out the material. However, also like his other books, the example problems in the chapter are not in the same realm of difficulty as the problems at the end of the chapter. With subject matter this difficult, it would be an excellent idea to acquire the solutions manual, a nearly impossible book to find. Good Luck!

In this engaging and provocative book, S. Craig Watkins examines two of the most important developments in the recent history of black cinema -- the ascendancy of Spike Lee and the proliferation of "ghettocentric films" like Boyz N the Hood and Menace II Society. Representing explores a distinct contradiction in American society: at the same time that black youth have become the targets of a fierce racial backlash against crime, drugs, affirmative action, and rap music, their popular expressive cultures have become highly visible and commercially viable.

Further, Watkins considers the imprint of black youth on the landscape of black filmmaking. He asks: after decades of neglect, why did the film industry suddenly develop a heightened interest in black cinema? Watkins shows how the black film wave was driven by several factors -- the transformation of the popular film industry; a reinvigorated independent filmmaking niche; the cross-marketing of music, video, and film; a burgeoning hip hop consumer culture; and historically specific struggles over the meanings and representations of "blackness" in American culture. He contends that despite social and economic marginalization, black youth have gained unprecedented access to the popular media and continue to influence not only black popular culture but the broader U.S. popular culture scene as well.

Representing offers a fascinating look at commercial culture and shows how and why it has become a crucial site for black American youth as they struggle to make their everyday lives more empowering, rewarding, and pleasurable in the face of formidable disadvantages.

Dear Colleague,

 

Consider Ethics is based on the belief that undergraduate students from widely divergent backgrounds and levels of preparation can understand, appreciate, and benefit from the best and most insightful work on ethical theory. My students at Youngstown State University have provided solid evidence to substantiate that belief: they arrive at YSU from rough inner city schools, richly-funded suburban schools, and grossly underfunded rural schools. They come from the Appalachian region of southern Ohio and West Virginia, from the coal mining districts of Pennsylvania, and from the rust belt cities of northeast Ohio and they represent every ethnic group that arrived in Youngstown to work in the steel mills.

 

They come together to examine, explore and debate ethical theories, to share perspectives and insights, and to learn with and from one another. They demonstrate, year after year, that they are fully capable of the careful study of ethical theory, that they find the subject fascinating, and that they not only gain richer perspectives on ethics and a deeper understanding of their own views, but also make significant gains in their philosophical abilities and in their self-confidence for tackling difficult subjects. It is the success and the insights of those students that inspired this book, and that has guided the development of new editions.

 

Ethical theory is not an esoteric mystery, but instead the rigorous development of ideas and views that people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds find fascinating. It is a subject of important historical insights, exciting contemporary developments, challenging arguments, and deep disagreements. The study of ethical study enables students to view contemporary ethical debates from new perspectives and different angles – often allowing them space and freedom to re-evaluate their beliefs on specific ethical issues.

 

What remains from earlier editions is the overall style and structure of the text: the major approaches to ethical theory, from classical to contemporary, are presented in an accessible conversational style, together with representative passages from major theorists. Every chapter includes challenging questions for reflection and discussion that pose difficult quandaries, avoid easy answers, and push students to think hard and reflectively about their own conclusions.

 

In the 3rd Edition, there are new exercises for every chapter, a number of new readings (both classical and contemporary), new boxed quotations, examples and questions. There are new specific debates on the question of performance-enhancing drugs as well as the issue of police use of deceptive interrogation practices, as well as new sections on value pluralism and on sentimentalism. All of the new material has been tested on my own long-suffering students, who have been wonderfully frank in telling me what material does – and does not – work.

Excellent text gets better

This already excellent text written by philosophy professor Dr.Bruce N.Waller just got better. It is an excellent choice as an introductory text in this field or for those of us who just want to understand the ethics not only of classical philosphical problems but of everyday challenges in our shared life in society. Waller uses a very readable style to explain the nature of these issues along with relevant readings.

Decent textbook

This was an assigned textbook for my ethics class. It was a decent enough textbook. Although I truly despise the narration by the author telling you what to think.

I truly don't understand why philosophy teachers don't just assign reading assignments by Actual philosophers rather than some guys interpretation of them.

An adequate introduction

Bruce N. Waller's "Consider Ethics: Theory, Readings, and Contemporary Issues" is for the most part an author-written text. Thus, the word "Readings" in the subtitle, while not totally inaccurate, is somewhat misleading. Other than the last chapter, which contains readings on current practical moral issues, the rest of the book is Waller's own description and analysis of the issues, with only an extremely brief primary-source reading (typically of three or four pages in length) at the end of the chapter.

Thankfully, Waller's discussion of the issues is fairly insightful and balanced. The issues he covers include most of the standard topics in theoretical ethics: utilitarianism, social contract ethics, egoism, relativism, pragmatism, virtue and care ethics, moral realism, free will and responsibility, etc. However, as already indicated, the "contemporary issues" section is confined to the last chapter. If one is looking for a text for an applied ethics class, this is not the one. Once again, let me stress that this is primarily a text in ethical theory.

That said, I will give my qualified recommendation. If one wants a text in theoretical ethics with few readings from other philosophers, Waller's book will do. However, the price, which is more than $90 new, is a consideration. There are excellent books in ethics on the market that can be had for less.
