This is a good beginner's reference for Excel. I wanted such a book for my granddaughter and this seems to meet my requirements just fine. I'm sure there are others but at this price and with my coaching, she will be just fine.

An excellent, concise overview of the second half of the 19th century in Europe. Sperber divides 1850-1914 into 3 subperiods and necessarily adopts a thematic approach. The 3 periods are the Age of Progress (1850-1871), the Age of Uncertainty (1871-1894), and the Age of Classical Modernism (1894-1914). For each period, Sperber opens with an overview chapter and then has chapters on demography & economics, social history, the arts & sciences, developments in politics at the popular-mass level, developments in politics at the state level, and more traditional diplomatic-political history. The thematic structure serves Sperber very well as he follows important themes across the second half of the 19th century.

The initial Age of Progress was characterized by expanding populations, economic growth stimulated by industrial expansion with spreading rail networks, increasing regional economic specialization and integration, rising standards of living, political reform with increasing guarantees of human rights and some expansion of political participation, great expansion of civil society, an intellectual trends towards positivism and exhaltation of the sciences as a model of inquiry. Ntionalism was an increasing force, in some cases, such as Napoleon III's France or Bismarck's Germany, coopted by conservatism governments to bolster their legitimacy and national integration. This period also sees the breakdown of the European state system established by the Congress of Vienna with Russia humbled, France re-emerging as a great power on the European stage, Austria weakened, and Prussia establishing preeminence in Europe.

Many of these theme continue into the Age of Uncertainty, notably the force of nationalism, the continued expansion of civil society, increasing urbanization, and substantial scientific progress and increasing economic impact of the natural sciences. This period also sees considerable disatisfaction with developments of the prior quarter century. Economic growth sluggish and was retarded by a major economic depression, nationalism created problems in the surviving great empires, increasing urbanization and industrialization produced considerable strains, and the liberal version of politics with dominance of a property owning elite was challenged. This period sees increasing intellectual doubts about views of progress, re-invigoration of conservatism and nascent socialist movements, and the emergence of political Catholocism but relatively well managed international politics, due in good part to Bismarck's intelligent diplomacy.

The succeeding age of Classical Modernism sees many features of the 20th century world assume familiar form. Substantial economic growth resumed driven by the emergence of new industries. Mass politics and their correlate, substantial interest group lobblies, emerge and government plays an increasing role in people's lives. The sciences see the emergence of markedly different new approaches. International politics become increasingly enmeshed in imperial-colonial adventures, and the European state system of the Bismarckian era fell apart with the realignments setting the stage for the combatants of WWI.

Clearly written and with an excellent bibliography, this is an excellent introduction and analytic overview. Some points emphasized by Sperber, such as the growth of civil society, the emergence of political Catholicism, and his shrewd discussions of the interaction of domestic politics and diplomacy in the years leading up to WWI, are often passed over in discussions of this period. Unlike many historians, Sperber is not afraid to use numerical data in the form of charts and graphs to summarize key points. His emphasis on the importance of the natural sciences in both intellectual history and economic history is also relatively distinctive and highly appropriate. There are some minor flaws. The maps used are not particularly good. I would have liked more demography. While Sperber is much better than most historians on developments in the sciences, he misses some truly important developments such as the emergence of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. This leads him to somewhat overestimate the revolutionary nature of early 20th century physics. Nonetheless, for anyone looking for an entry into the complicated history of this period, this is the place to start.

Disappointed

The title of this book is very misleading. As a veteran teacher of 11 years, I am constantly looking for professional text to help improve my practice and this book falls short. The book primarily offers surface level activities and projects that might represent best practices from decades past. My hope was that I would find bona fide strategies and techniques on how to support higher level thinking and content specific literacy strategies. The information included in this text could easily be found online for free...since most teachers like myself pay for books like this one out of our own pockets, my best advice is to save your money and skip this text.

Raucous, uninhibited and proud, Fela was one of Africa's most intriguing personalities, for his controversial public persona as much as for his music. It's difficult to say for what Fela, born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, was best known: his band publicized Afropop in the 1980s; he repeatedly spoke out against unfair politics in Africa and abroad; his life was abundant with drugs and sex. This exhaustive and objective profile, written by a Yale ethnomusicology professor, examines the Nigerian superstar's life and work from 1938 to his death in 1997. Veal traces Fela's roots to the diverse town of Abeokuta, noting the musical influences left by family and community members there. Following a typically mischievous childhood, Fela pursued an education at Trinity College of Music in London. Soon he and his orchestra were touring the U.S. under the name Nigeria 70, developing the new sound of Afropop. Although the tour was not a popular breakthrough, their subsequent return to Nigeria placed them on the budding African music stage. The book goes on to survey Fela's life at home and worldwide, detailing his imprisonment and physical abuse, his performances, his listeners' reactions and his compositions. Fela covered political corruption, mysticism, frustration with Western views on Africa and other significant subjects in his music, all the while continuing a sexually promiscuous life. Veal has taken on the staggering task of portraying a musician/politician/rebel, and he executes it well.

Fela was born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, in 1938 into an upper-middle-class family whose members included several well-known educators and religious figures. In 1958, he was sent to London's Trinity College of Music, where he discovered Charlie Parker and John Coltrane and soon formed his own band, Koola Lobitos. Over the years, he developed a jazz-funk fusion style dubbed Afrobeat. Little known in America, Fela recorded dozens of albums and became an international superstar with a social and political conscience. His blistering attacks on Nigeria's corrupt military government landed him in jail, in exile, and in danger of losing his life. Veal (ethnomusicology, Yale) became interested in Fela nearly 20 years ago as a student at Boston's Berklee College of Music. Extensive notes, a comprehensive bibliography, and a discography reflect the book's scholarly credentials. interesting but doesn't read fluently

This book contains a lot of interesting information concerning Fela Kuti(family background, historical, cultural and political environment) but sometimes I had the distinct feeling I was reading a scientific research report. A little more fluency in writing would have made reading more enjoyable

Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense

A timely exploration of the father of Afro-beat. Veal, who we learn had occasion to play with Fela and spent time at the Shrine, is obviously a fan of the music and his enthusiasm is palpable. Veal's work is distinguished on many levels. As an ethnomusicologist, Veal offers rigorous descriptions and insights into the compositional aspects of Fela's work. We are given the specifics of Fela's innovations and refinements with Afro-beat. Veal locates Fela's accomplishments within the context of its forbears (E.T. Mensah, James Brown, John Coltrane, etc.)and 20th century African/Afrodiaporic music in general. From Nkrumah to Obasanjo, Veal's discussion of Nigerian/African culture and politics is well researched and thoughtful. There are great nuggets of biographical information from Fela's brief feud with Paul McCartney to November 14th, "Fela Day" in Berkeley (go figure). Veal offers a wealth of information on Fela's family and the impact his parents (his mother in particular) had on his musical and political development. We get the blow-by-blow account of Fela's confrontations with the Nigerian authorities (often, as with the Kalakuta Massacre, in harrowing detail). On the critical throretical tip, Veal 'samples' Gilroy, Jameson, Fanon, Spivak (and others), engaging in a extended discussion of Fela's compositions as postcolonial 'texts.' Though at times distractingly academic, Veal is rigorous in his deconstruction of Fela and gender, the "specific symbolic and psychological functions" of strategic historical essentialism, mysticism, etc., avoiding the cheap and oversimplistic assessments that often surround the man (often, as Veal notes, in service of hegemonic notions of "civilization"). There is much I loved about this book: the bits about Fela's "punk" approach, the rejoinder to jazzbo(zos) and their complaints about the lack of technical virtuosity in Fela's playing, the similarities between Fela's work and blaxploitation cinema, the Yoruban (tragic) basis of his music, his later compositions as underrated "African symphonies." Veal isn't afraid to write about Fela's misguided relationship with Professor Hindu, the emptiness of Fela's vaguely anarchic rhetoric as a concrete political agenda (Fela wasn't kidding about his aspirations), the problematics of Fela's lifestyle (too much pot, rampant and unprotected sex) and the effect of his lifestyle on his wives. I would have liked to have seen more on the parallels between Fela's development of Afro-beat and the stylistic exchanges with the J.B.s, and the Afrodiasporic interchanges that led to the development of hip-hop and modern dancehall. More on Dennis Bovell's involvement with Fela and more than passing reference to the Biafran conflict. The passage on Fela's continuing influence (and the intense rediscovery taking place as we speak by a new generation of musicians and music lovers) is all too brief. But these are minor quibbles. Veal has written a marvelous book on a man who was, by turns, confrontational, generous, autocratic, wild, and always brilliant. Essential reading on an essential figure. Long live Fela!

It's about time!

Fela is almost as important as Bob Marley in the world of black music, but no one has really written a serious book about him until now, and Michael Veal's book is an excellent one in my opinion. Sometimes it's a bit academic but it still provides a lot of detail on Fela's entire life, on the music of his entire career, and all of the Nigerian political backgound, which is substantial. I love Fela's music and I knew he was a legend, but I never quite realized how he put his life on the line to make the music he made and say the things he said, and how heavy it became between him and the Nigerian government. And I also never realized how crazy he was - not surprising considering the fact that he was a brilliant (insane?) artist, and also considering how heavy things became as time went on. That this man managed to survive as long as he did and turn out so much great music is nothing short of miraculous! I think the book is an invaluable document of the political and musical legacy of the 1960s as it developed in Africa during the 1970s and 1980s. I learned a lot about Africa, not only musically but culturally and politically too.

Fell flat for me

I begin to read “300 Rains,” by Heather O’Malley once before and couldn't get through all the wordiness, so I quit about one-third of the way in. However, when I began to see so many glowing reviews about this work pop up, I somehow thought that perhaps it was me. Maybe I wasn't in a good space when I attempted to read it for the first time, so I picked it up and began again.

Well, this time I did get all the way through the book, so I’m now writing this review only to provide some balance to all the “glowing,” and curiously, mostly very brief reviews that have been posted. I have long been of the opinion that if you have nothing to say that is good about a book, it probably would be better not to say anything. After all, a typical author invests considerable time and energy in telling their tale. On the plus side, author Heather O'Malley is obviously very knowledgeable about matters both academic and anthropological and her book is well-edited.

However, I found the story that was presented to be so far-fetched as to be ridiculous. Although the author has knowledge of gender variance, she included almost every possible element that could exist in a transgender novel, and put them all together in a long-winded and drawn out concoction, leading to what most of the reviewers felt is a highly moralistic and inspiring ending. Well, I beg to differ about the ending. I found it to be “much ado about very little.” I don't want to spoil the reading experience for those who still want to attempt this novel, so I won’t go into detail. I'd really like you to formulate your own conclusion, if you choose.

On balance, I feel that this book was a bloated attempt at a transgender novel that fell completely flat. Although the story held some promise, I did not like how it was “teased” out longer and longer, and I particularly did not like the ending. Perhaps this was so because I expected so much more after reading the views of the scores of reviews of the positive reviewers.

A Wonderful & Diffrent Story.

An interesting and different unasked for gender transformation story, with plenty discoveries and insights. A peak at what it is to be transgendered from someone who did not start out that way. While the transformation is unasked for and unwilling this is Not a "Forced Fem" book and all that usually means. Filled with reactions of interaction with family, friends and coworkers and his own feelings as he becomes a she. What does "he" tell people? Can "he" stop it? can "she" change back? can "she" live with it? How and why did this happen? It is intriguing journey as follow the protagonist's quest to answer these questions and more. All to the background of being a researcher in to aboriginal tribes and a university professor, plus all that entails.

Overall, an entertaining and thought provoking read.
